Hotel booking sites - UK
#2
You really should re-post this over on the Europe Forum.
There are a couple of good sites for London - especially Londontown.com But that is mostly because there are hundreds of hotels in London and it helps sort places by price.
But in general for traveling around the UK - you don't need a 'booking site' - just book directly w/ the hotels/B&Bs.

www.betterbidding.com Priceline bidding in big cities
saves a tonne www.booking.com best if you do not want
to bid book nice discounts with them a lot
Lastly for budget Otel.com great values with cash back
You get vouchers for best room available no
extra booking fees one low price plus cash back.
These almost always save me a tonne over booking direct.

betterbidding is not a booking site. And of course Priceline is great -- but it isn't a 'booking' site as such. It is a blind bidding site and you don't know which hotel you got until after you've paid for it. In the UK PL is really only good for London and LHR hotels --not for other parts of the country. (BTW - never EVER use PL's regular booking side. The bargains are on the 'name your own price' feature)
booking.com and otel aren't that great for the UK
What works in some other countries doesn't necessarily apply to the UK . . .

I also find it helpful to first try the town or city's own website for accommodations that can be contacted directly. For London, we have successfully used www.londontown.com several times.
For last minute bookings, try laterooms.com or lastminute.com.
If you want to narrow down your search to a few hotels to contact directly, I have a couple of websites that may be helpful:
http://www.britainexpress.com/accommodation.htm
http://www.hotels-of-britain.co.uk/index.htm
