Savannah Best area, good hotels. Help appreciated as limited planning time!
I've just started researching books and posts (of which I realize there are many) but my planning time is limited and I would be very appreciative of some direction to help me narrow things down quickly.
"Mature" couple, spending a couple of nights in Savannah a few weeks from now, first visit. Looking for a comfortable, modern and moderate hotel (say 4*, maybe 3 1/2 *) in a "good" location for seeing sights and eating out within walking distance as much as possible.

You probably want to be in the Historic District fairly close to the water.
As a result of recommendations on this forum I booked Planters Inn. It's located right on a square.
Haven't gone yet so I cannot comment.

We like the Hyatt on Bay, a nice water view room is wonderful, a 4 star.
Staybridge Suites was our last stay, and we really enjoyed this hotel for the kitchen capacity, it is more of a 3.5 star.
Hampton Inn used to be our go to ever visit. 3.5 Star as well.
Never stayed at any of the bed and breakfast.

We stayed at the Hyatt on River Street. Our room was on a corner so we saw town and the river, lovely hotel, lovely room.
We loved eating at the Pink House which is right next door to the Planters Inn which is very beautiful and I remember reading great reviews from people who stayed there.
If you stay at the Hyatt or the Planters Inn, you are just at the beginning of the walk you can take .. through each square, past the wonderful gardens, homes, fountains, Telfair Museum, EBShaver bookstore and to the end, which is a wonderful huge fountain and park.
Easily walked and a wonderful day.
I can't remember the names of the restaurants we went to but we did not have a bad meal, that's for sure.
And I admit to eating too many pralines from the shop on RiverWalk

Thank you starrs (and Myer). If you (or anyone else) has one or 2 personal favorites, let me know. Also any other "quick tips" for visiting Savannah. Again, I'm going to try to cram in some reading, but this is very helpful as I want to book within the next couple of days.
Also thinking about an overnight in the Golden Isles - looking for charm and nature. Any specific accommodation recommendations would be welcome.

For nature, go to Jekyll Island and try to fit in a kayak trip in the marshes if you can.
For charm stay at the Jekyll Island Club and be amazed at the "cottages" for the wealthiest from the NE.
Another option on Jekyll is the new Hampton Inn.
If you don't stay on Jekyll, there are many options on St Simons.
A real trip is a day trip to Cumberland Island. The ferry leaves from St Marys GA. For a real splurge stay at the Greyfield Inn, but that ferry leaves from FL.
Enjoy your trip.

Scarlett, the praline shop is called River Street Sweets and is the cornerstone of many of our vacation memories with our girls. They have locations in Savannah and Charleston and we used to plan beach weeks at HHI with the express purpose of stocking up on pralines. I often send their pralines to my girls, one away at college and one in her first job, and it reminds them of the happy times we had as a family. Through the years, we have been to that part of the country probably 12-15 times. I could learn to make my own pralines, I am sure, but it wouldn't be authentic.

They have several locations in Savannah.
