My wife and I will be arriving at Logan around 4:00 pm from Los Angeles next fall to go leaf peeping. Where would you suggest we stay the first night before we head off to the White Mountains in New Hampshire the next morning. I don't want to be caught in the commute in the am (if there is one leaving the city). Is there a nice place the stay outside Boston on the way to New Hampshire where we could have a nice breakfast with a view or some character before we head out. Should we just stay near the hotel?

We'll be coming back in a week to spend 4 nights in Boston. Any suggestions for a nice hotel near the center of town. We'd like to be as close to all the attractions as possible.

Colonial Inn in Concord has a great breakfast and is right in the lovely, picturesque center of the beautiful town of Concord, as well as being close to highways that go to NH.

Lexington and Burlington are both adjacent to Rte 3 north to NH. Woburn is adjacent to Rte. 93 north. All have chain hotels.

For the Boston part, Back Bay and/or the waterfront are the two areas most centrally located for walking, restaurants and tourist attractions.

I'm in Boston a few times a year on business. I've recently started staying at the Westin Copely Plaza as I think it's a good combination of location and value. I've also stayed at the Intercontinental and the Boston Harbor Hotel. Both are fine, as well.

At night, the Back Bay area is going to be a better spot.

The Plaza is a really good choice close to the Back Bay but not close really to the tourist sites, and generally that starts in Boston Commons (park) where the State House (Capitol Building is located. That's the start of the Freedom Trail, and from there you wind your way around downtown to the historical sites.

I'd suggest staying either close to the waterfront or Quincy Market, like the Marriott Customs House. Most of the rooms on the higher floors would have an amazing view of the city and right outside your door are lots of restaurants.

Since you are arriving at 4pm and are coming from CA, you could easily spend your first night in NH. Although the Mariott Courtyard in Concord NH is a chain hotel next to I93 (straight shot from Boston), it is next to Horse Shoe Pond which is a wonderful walking area. Don't know how the breakfasts are there.
The other poster was referring to Concord MA which is a beautiful town.

Do be aware that you will be in rush hour traffic leaving the city on the day of arrival. Maybe you will want to spend the night in/near the city and leave at a lazy west coast am time. That said, do try to get a bit towards your destination that evening. Days are getting short in October, so getting on eastern time as soon as you can will allow you to get more face time with the leaves.

The Copley Square area is indeed located close to the tourist sites and is probably the most central location in Boston. Easy walk to Boston Common and right on the Green line for easy access to other areas of the city.

You might want to think about staying in Portsmouth NH for your first night. It's a very cute small harbor city with lots of great restaurants. Downtown, there's the Sheraton Harborside, Hilton Garden Inn and a new Residence Inn. You could also stay at the Wentworth Marriott in New Castle, on the water and a gorgeous property.

But emalloy is right about the traffic. You'll be traveling at rush hour, if you land at 4pm. Although, if you wait until around 6:30, you'll miss most of it.
