I thought I read that if u r not a Chilean citizen u can show your passport (?) and do not have to pay taxes on hotel bills. Using the search feature cant seem to pull anything up. Is this correct?

It should happen when you pay your bill.

Both true and not true. Not all hotels offer it as it entails some extra paperwork for them. It is not obligatory for them to offer it. You are more likely to find it in larger hotels. You can pay in cash or with a non-Chilean issued credit card and need to show your passport and/or the copy of the landing card you filled it before going through passport control. It is best to advise at check-in.

Also in Uruguay no hotel tax for tourist. In Argentina there is a huge tax , over 20% if I am right.

In Peru also no hotel tax for tourists.

When I stayed at Hotel Las Torres they would only give me no tax if I paid in USD. And then they applied their own exchange rate which was so poor that it was almost the same as paying tax by the time I was done with it. But all the other lodgings were pretty straightforward, maybe they fudged the exchange rate a bit but nothing as bad as Las Torres.

No, a US credit card would get me the same "Privelege".

If I remember correctly there was one B&B that only wanted cash, and CLP that.
