Great places to visit: where, why, experience?
Hello everyone I was wondering what are some great places to visit and why as well as any personal experience you may have to offer in that area.

What makes an experience great depends on you the individual. That which some describe as 'Great!' may be just 'Ho Hum' to me.

There are thousands of Fodorites and they have visited hundreds of thousands of places on every continent. You question is too broad by many MANY miles.

Of course, you could try reading the many, many trip reports on this board, but that would require you to do some work yourself. Meanwhile, between this thread and your other one, you're in the running for the prize for silliest question of 2011, and the year's only just started.
figured a broad topic might actually get people to think about what they enjoy and just talk about somewhere they had fun visiting on a trip.

Honestly I have enjoyed any place I have ever been. They were all great and I had a fun time. In Europe that includes Amsterdam, Paris, Venice, Geneva, and the towns in Switzerland along Lac Leman. But any major city of Europe is pretty much a 'no-brainer' for a wonderful trip.
But you could go continent by continent, finding great places to visit all around the world. Your lifetime is not long enough to see everything.

I loved China. My mom would have hated it and I wouldn't recommend it to her. Other friends and relatives, I would recommend it in a heartbeat.
Stop trying to get other people to do your homework for you by asking ridiculously broad questions. If you want to do actual research, then post real questions and you'll likely get actual help.
Your question is like someone asking "what are some good restaurants and would you recommend them to family/friends?" Well, what area, what budget, what interest (Mexican vs Italian vs steakhouse vs Chinese vs fast food, etc) are you talking about? That's how broad and silly your question was.
Put more than 30 seconds worth of work into assignments and you might pass junior high.

Finding a travel discussion board is hardly rocket science. These days kids are computer literate practically from birth. Having found one, there's no need to ask a ridiculously broad question when it can be answered by doing some reading.

Going to Venice (that's Venice, Italy) a couple of times.

There has truly been something I've like about EVERY place I've visited. Some of my favorites:
Washington, DC, and surrounding area for the history.
New York City for it's sheer vibrancy, the plays, and the museums
Paris, for the sheer beauty of the city, the museums, and the pastries.
Rome/Florence for the history, the architecture, the wine, and the gelato.
Quebec City for the architecture and the food.
Seattle area, for the lovely summer weather, stunning views of Mt Ranier, and walks at low tide on Puget Sound
Portland, OR, for the parks and the restaurants
San Diego, CA, for the mild winter weather and Balboa Park.
Puerto Vallarta for the food, the Malecon, and the charm of the cobblestone streets.
Cancun, for the white sand beaches and turqouise water
I could go on and on..........
