10 Days in a Carry-On

This was interesting, but three nightgowns?? I'm going to roll more stuff next time.

I saw this link over on the airline forum too. My comment there was 7 pairs of pants? For a 10 day trip? Why so many?

I hate rolling, I find it takes up more space. I'm a fold and layer packer. with judicious use of ziplock bags to condense and contain undies and socks and stuff.

I usually fold things too, but when they showed the difference between rolling and folding - it looks like it works. I agree - toooo much stuff for 10 days.

Well it doesn't work that way when I try it! (rolling) ;-)

3 nightgowns?? I missed that part, why in the world would you need more than one (if that!)?

The biggest mistake I see in this "pack" is she has multiple items that serve the same purpose. That's what I try to think of in eliminating pieces before packing... "can something I already have in the bag serve the same purpose?"

I suppose it doesn't hurt that she's like a size 2 and her suitcase is filled with doll clothes.

I roll everything into large ziploc bags.Four sundresses in one bag, another with a couple of T-shirts and capris, one of bras/underwear/ nightgown and voila! enough for a week with plenty of room leftover. Winter, well that's another story. All my shoes go into a plastic bag. I don't like what she does with her shoe bottoms touching the clothes and luggage. Think about what your shoes step on. Do you want it on your clean clothes or the interior of the suitcase?

Agreed - my shoes have little shoe mitts that they wear in my suitcase. Shoe bottoms are disgusting.

Before I clicked on the link, I read some of the comments. When I saw Suze's comment about 7 pairs of pants, I thought maybe it was supposed to be seven pairs of panties. Then I looked at the actual article.

What sort of person actually packs like this? In a carry-on? I read through that list of things she claims the suitcase will hold. Then I did a really quick comparison with my own packing list and made some comments.

three pairs of shorts - uh... okay, if she's going to a really hot place. I'd only bring max two pairs, though.

three pairs of dress pants - I don't think I actually own so many.

one skirt - I don't like wearing skirts.

three pairs of casual pants or jeans - well, I do own about a dozen of those, but I'd never bring more than one pair plus the one pair I'm wearing

three nightgowns - I guess if you are going to have sex with someone who likes ripping the nightgown to pieces, maybe, otherwise I can't see any reason to bring that many.

three bathing suits - well, I don't much like bathing, but I know there are bathing suits that quick-dry, so why would anyone need more than maybe two?

one sarong - well, maybe.

three lightweight sweaters - is she going to a warm place (needing multiple bathing suits and shorts) or a cold place (needing multiple sweaters)?

four dresses - I hate dresses even more than skirts (yes, I'm female)

10 casual shirts - okay, if she doesn't have time for laundry.

six dress shirts - wait a minute... wasn't this a ten day trip? Why does she need a total of 16 shirts?

a clutch - not sure what that is, actually.

toiletries - finally something slightly sane

and two pairs of shoes - I usually make sure the shoes I wear are comfortable enough to walk in all day, but I guess maybe I could bring a pair in my luggage if I really had to,

Okay.

16 shirts and 3 sweaters. 6 pairs of pants, plus 3 pairs of shorts, plus a skirt... and 4 dresses.

Is she planning to change clothes three times each day, or what?

And where on that list is the underwear? Socks?

And what airline is she flying with, anyway? Don't they have weight limits? Rolling the clothes do not make them weigh less. No, wait, she's a flight attendant. Maybe she doesn't have to stay under the same weight limits as everyone else.

I really wish the author posted this herself, so we could clarify a few things with her -lol!

Yes I can see 3 bathing suits and a sarong, but not to the same destination I need 3 sweaters, 4 dresses, and 3 dress pants.

I also want to know how much this suitcase WEIGHS when packed. Because it looks well over-limit to me!!!

That's what I thought too, suze - it must weigh a ton! Maybe she's just trying to show how much you CAN pack, not that it's really recommended to take that much junk

Having paid for overwt baggage more than once, I have since gone to CA twice for ten days and then two weeks with a carry-on. The key is not how many items you bring but the thinness of what you bring. I have special cropped pants I travel with cause they're so thin-- same with tops and sweaters, caled 'tissue thin' or layering tops. Always wear the jeans cause they're the heaviest. Dont bring skirts or dresses anywhere, but did to Paris where I packed a black pencil skirt for lunch at Grand Vefour. Black pantsuit will take you anywhere though. I leave the weight for 3 prs shoes minimum-- sandals, ballets, and mary-janes cover it all.

I'm pretty sure a "clutch" is a small purse, like an evening bag?

I'm a roller but this is way too many clothes.
Agree about the shoes, I'd rather have more shoes than all those pants.

There are people, like my sister, who will not wear the same outfit without washing it. The woman in the article is a flight attentdant and maybe she picks up other routes besides her standard, or maybe she is a floating fa.

A clutch is any bag you 'clutch' -- no straps.

I missed this thread back in May but am glad it was revived. anyger's response made me laugh out loud!! This was the best part:

three nightgowns - I guess if you are going to have sex with someone who likes ripping the nightgown to pieces, maybe, otherwise I can't see any reason to bring that many

I'm a roller, my husband is a folder. Both work for us - my husband is super particular about the way he folds things and I am better at rolling, so our respective methods work for us.

I pack exactly like this woman, except I don't take as much clothing. I need room for electronics and stuff I buy.

Last summer we did a beach trip combined with city, so I had to pack differnt types of clothes and managed just fine with carryon. I took 2 swimsuits and swam everyday - just alternated suits on different days. The sarong is a definite must for me - works as a coverup, a beach blanket, can wrap up stuff to carry to the beach, etc. It's also a nice blanket for the plane - for when it isn't actually cold on the plane, but you want to sleep under something.

I had 2 pairs of shorts - again, for alternating days when we were at the beach, then capris for evening. I wore capris for the city portion of the trip too - just paired them with nicer tops and sandals.

I took 3 nightgowns as well - they don't take up much space and it is nice to have a fresh one to wear without having to wash them out often.

>There are people, like my sister, who will not wear the same outfit without washing it.<

Not I, especially pants/shorts/skirts. Those I will wear 2, sometimes 3 times. With bathing suits, I have three pairs of neutral bottoms~black, brown, and navy~and several tankini tops, many of which will go with at least 2 of the bottoms. I always pack 2 shirts for each pair of shorts/pants; each shirt much go with at least 2 of the shorts/pants. I always wear a light jacket on the plane and my bulkiest shoes.....
I am a roller and a stuffer.

My ex husband overpacked to an extreme. Why he wanted to bring 2 pairs of jockey shorts for each day baffled me. He always wore less than half of what he took......I'd rather wear everything~some of it twice!

I roll my stuff. I like it better than the other option because it's easy to get one thing out without having to unpack and repack.

I go for 30 days with less than she packs. Three nightgowns and a sarong? Unless you're in a hostel, the sarong alone will do. I carry one pair of adidas warm up pants, they become my combination ultra-casual pants (maybe for a sports bar or laundry day), pajamas, and excercise clothes.

I don't pack that much for a month in Paris or London, where I do tend to dress nicer in the evenings.

I could never fit that much in my carry-on!!

Since I'm allergic to fabric softener, I can't do real laundry away from home, except for washing a few things out in the sink that will dry overnight. That usually means that I have to bring more clothes.

I do like a clean shirt every day, so I would bring 10--but I'd make sure that some of them could be dressed up for the evening, so I might wear them for two evenings before I wore them for a full day.

For most vacations, I don't take a bathing suit at all; for a ski trip, I take one for the hot tub every evening; for a cruise, I take two, so one is always dry.

I would definifely take multiple pjs--wear one nightgown for 10 days--yuck!!

I can usually wear a pair of casual pants for three days, unless I, as we say in our family, spill my soup in my lap. So, I'd probable take three pair--denim, black, and khaki.

For the evening, I'd probably take a pair of black pants and a black skirt, along with a few nicer tops.

For shoes, two pair of comfy walking shoes, and one pair of dressier flats for the evening--plus a pair of sandals if we were going someplace warm.

I would probably take one cardigan and a lightweight blazer--I tend to get cold.

I rarely take shorts unless we're going someplace where I know it's going to be very warm--they're just not veratile enough for me.

I'd take a rain coat or long jacket--wear it on the plane.
