We did that drive two years ago. Its hwy driving all the way, and is easy provided it is not dumping snow. Nothing hard and there was a really pretty canyon you go through We stopped in Glenwood Springs and hiked up to Doc Holiday's grave - really pretty hike. Snowmass is great and we loved Aspen as well.

If you are flying in and out of Denver, watch the weather. If it is snowing hard they usually close Vail Pass. We stayed at Copper Mtn last year (loved it!)which is on the Denver side of the pass, and they closed Vail Pass 3 times in a week. A lot of people got stuck.

The Eagle County airport is 30 miles west of Vail and quite a bit lower in elevation--is that what you are really wondering about? The drive between Eagle airport and Snowmass?

When I've done that stretch it's been very easy highway driving, and I don't hear about the problems on that stretch the way I hear about traffic or weather issues east of Vail (ie between Vail and Denver). Between Eagle airport and Aspen/Snowmass, you never go over any high passes like you would between Vail and Denver.

It's an easy drive--hour and a half?

Thanks, this is great info. We are flying into Vail from Atlanta. We have stayed in Vail several times & love it but thought we would go back to Snowmass since we haven't been there in several years. We saw good, nonstop to Vail/Eagle so grabbed it! Now we'll decide what to do from there.
It's not that far to Snowmass but I was just wondering about the highways & access.

The Eagle/Vail airport is actual between Eagle and Gypsum but we are trying to make you think it is close to Vail. From the airport you can see the east west I-70 on the other side of the valley. I think the signage from the airport will direct you back to Eagle for access to I-70. After existing the airport drive head west towards Gypsum, it will save back tracking about 10 miles or more. You can access I-70 west at Gypsum. You will have about 30 miles on I-70 to Glenwood Springs where you exit for Aspen. The road south is a mix of two and four lanes for about 35 miles to the Snowmass turn off. Even if snowing the road is well maintained since it is the only road in and out of the Aspen ski complex.
