Passport close to expiry

Hi guys, need to be pointed in the right direction please. I'm due to fly to France for 6 days skiing on the 9th January 2011, my passport runs out 14th February 2011. I keep getting told different things. Ski world who i have booked with say i'm fine to travel on my current passport, my cousin who is an air hostess says I should renew my passport now? Any advise would be great, if i do need to renew then i need to act now.

thanks x

Renew now. Why have that worry hanging over your head during your vacation? You have plenty of time to get it done before you leave.

It doesn't matter wha tyour cousin tells you - or what I tell you.

Only 2 things matter.

If the airline will let you on the plane and if the German will let you into the country. I would contact the consulate of the latter and ask them.

Well, actually I would reco you do that.

If it were me I would just go and get a new passport immediately and then not have to think about it.

I seem to recall that airlines require that a passport expiring be renewed before travel. No matter, why would you not simply renew your passport and not worry about it?

From the US Department of State website:

Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six (6) months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met.

I would not base a decision on what Ski World or people on a chat board tell you. I agree with nytraveler, the airline and the consulate are your best sources of info.

But why not just renew? You'll need a new passport anyway so I think it's best to just get one now.

Sarastro, we were posting about the same time. I get the impression the OP is not American so it's possible the rules are different for other nationalities. However your advice to renew is still good since it has to be done sooner or later anway.

I think we're all on the same page Wickchick, it's best to go ahead and renew.

honestly - Contacting the consulate/embassy really won't solve anything. Since the airline check in desk is the first decision point where you have to show your passport, they are the ones that determine if you can board the flight - not French immigration. You won't see French authorities until you arrive in France (w/ the slim possibility they'd deny entry)

Technically you are OK - only a few European countries require 3-6 month validity.

But why would you even consider not renewing now? You'll have to do it as soon as you get back anyway. And since you have so much time, you wouldn't even have to pay for expedited service.

renew it now . . .

Oops - I assumed you are American (the comment about not needing expedited service).

But P_M is right - things may be totally different depending on your nationality.

Admittedly this information is from the US Dept of State but it is a Schengen country (such as France) entry requirement:

you must have a passport valid three months beyond the proposed stay.

You should renew right away. In September 2005 as I was boarding a flight to Paris from Newark Liberty Internatinal airport, a very astute Air France ticket agent at the gate said.. "Well, we'll let you on the plane, but France may not let you into the country". My passport was due to expire in January 2006. She told me that generally there should be at least 6 months remaining on your passport if you wish to travel into France.. Happily, I had no problems entering France but you should renew ASAP, since in fact you still have sufficient time to do so.

The US State Dept gives us the requirements for US citizens but it's not the same for nationality. My South African friends require a visa to visit the Schengen zone. But that's beside the point, I think we all agree that renewal is best.

Sorry, I meant to say it's not the same for every nationality.

Expiry isn't a real word, at least not in a standard English dictionary used in the US, so I presume the OP is some other nationality. Americans don't usually refer to "air hostesses", either.

The rule is that your passport must be valid for another six months. If this were a land crossing, there would not be a problem, but as has been pointed out, the airline can prevent you from boarding a flight if the rules are not respected.

Christina, those were the exact words that tipped me off the OP is not American. Great minds.

Renew now. If you are British(?) the additional time still left on your existing passport will be added to your new one, so why wait & worry?

Skiworld is a UK company, hence I assume OP is British and has a british passport - so no need to renew, your passport is valid for the duration, so OK ...the rest above just applied to the US and non EU citizens.
Peace.
