Wurzburg or Augsburg at Christmas

I like your division of time. Würzburg is good for two days with the Residenz and the Festung (castle) to see. It is one of my favorite cities in Germany.
I visited Augsburg during the Christmas Market several years ago and enjoyed it as well. We saw the Dom and the Altstadt.

I think Gary_Mc is right on the money. The Residenz and the Festung are memorable. I've never been really enchanted with the city, for some reason.
I spent a couple of days in Augsburg and enjoyed wandering around in it. And of course I visited the Fuggerei.

There is quite a lot to see in Augsburg, once the richest imperial city in the Holy Roman Empire and centre of goldsmith craft. Apart from the Fuggerei, there is the town hall with the Golden Hall, the Maximilanmuseum with its art treasures, the cathedral and several other notable churches including a peculiarity, fthe church pairs with a protestant and a catholic church nect to each other, and a notable amount of renaissance architecture.

I agree with quokka. Don't write Augsburg off but I guess this comes a little bit late.
If you speak German, perhaps the Augsburger Puppenkiste will be cool. If not, there are English speaking free walking tours run by students as well running every day at 11am at Rathausplatz, Augsburg. I think the website is http://jeanrichardtour.com/ They bring people in and around and tells you about the illustrious Roman history here in the city which other cities do not have at all!

"Scrawnyy", your revival of these Augsburg threads were timely for us. We are beginning a vacation in Germany in a week with a three day stay in Augsburg. I have not visited Augsburg in 4 decades and my wife has never been there. The positive remarks of "Quokka" and now yours are encouraging. Thanks, Gary
