Allegiant Air question

I will be flying from Fargo ND to Mesa AZ in Feb. for a 2 week stay. Does anyone have travel experience with Allegiant? Especially this route?

I will appreciate any information you can give me no matter what it is. I also need a mid size car rental. Is it cheaper for a car rental if I book it along with the flight on Allegiant's web site? Their car rental company is Alamo.

thanks

Allegiant is a cheap airline with lots of add on costs, if you do not already have your ticket, you can save $15 by purchasing at the airport; plus you can save by not checking a bag, not paying for seat selection, not paying for priority boarding etc.

Where I live we get a lot of people from a city 90 minutes away, every one on the flight is there to save money and it is crowded and cheap, but it gets you there. I use them once or twice a year to get to Las Vegan

I would not worry about booking the rental car through them, Google cheap car rentals and you can find better deals

Thanks somemom. I will not be able to purchace the ticket in advance at the airport since it is a long distance away. There will be no checked bags and I will not need a seat selection or priority boarding. The Allegiant web site assigns a seat automatically and I need to know how to get a price without a seat selection. I don't care which seat is at all since it is a direct flight both ways.

You say I should not book the car rental through Allegiant. Have you gotten better prices dealing directly with the car rental companies?

Thanks for your help somemom.

Does anyone else have any advise?

Can you compare the prices of the flight and a car rental reserved separately, to the price of a combo deal through Allegient? Or simply look at what it would cost to rent the car on it's own and then compare to how much the car rental would add to the flight cost.

My grandparents have used Allegient many times and love it. It's cheap and easy.

when you are on the site and the seat choice shows up, you click remove next to the seat; i think there are 2 places to remove seat choice and priority boarding. You only save $15 by buying the ticket at the airport, not worth the long drive.

carrentals.com was my best fee a few weeks ago

Have used Allegiant to Florida from SC several times. Nice flight, only one problem in several years.....an early evening flight to Tampa turned into a LATE night departure and late arrival....cruise the next day....got to hotel really late. This is the ONLY time this has happened. Flights from here are usually crowded so I would pay the extra to book on line to be sure of seat!

Hi bernieann, I assume you are not talking about booking a specific seat - just Getting a seat on the flight right?

As for booking of a rental car, don't stick to the Allegiant website, check Travelocity or Expedia, it is always good to do a price comparison

My last Allegiant comment was in Oct....since then (April) I have flown to Miami. NOW they charge for a carry on bag. I checked with other airlines after I go back. I can drive one hour more, have a choice of a multitude of flights EACH DAY and don't have to pay for a carry on....price was almost identical if I added on the carry on and a night in the hotel to fly out at 6 am from Miami home.....probably won't use Allegiant again!

I am very disappointed with Allegiant's new policy to charge (about $35 for carry-on baggage) as of several months ago. This adds $75 extra to what used to be a low price to travel.

They keep nickling and diming people with extra charges until the price is no longer a good deal, and driving instead of flying ends up being a viable alternative.

Allegiant is the absolute WORST airline for nickle and diming. They charge extra for almost everything.

janisj - Are you sure Allegiant is the worst for nickle and diming?

Allegiant's bag fees if booked in advance:
1st - $34.99
2nd - $34.99
3rd & 4th - $50
carryon - $30 ($35 at airport)

Spirit's bag fees advance/airport:
1st - $28/33
2nd - $35/40
3rd through 5th - $85/90
carryon - $30/35

$10 less if belonging to $9 club, and all going up another $5 later this year.

So, at least for some bag fees, they don't seem to be worse than Spirit. And both charge for advanced seat assignments and any type of drink.

The bag fees aren't all that bad. But Allegiant charges for everything. And the website is sneaky because you have to opt out of things instead of adding them

I haven't flown Spirit - looks like both are bad.

We have a fellow on the US board who recommends Allegiant to everyone traveling in CA/NV/OR/WA -mostly to avoid rental car drop off fees . . . Not explaining that the "low" fares can easily double when adding the fees.
