Virginia..small quaint beach towns?

DH, dog and I would like to take a beach vacation right after Labor Day and are considering Virgina. I looked at the atlas and saw what looks like a peninsula, with Chincoteague prominently displayed. What can you tell me about it? Waiting for my AAA tour books but am starting my search here. We are Michiganders and know nothing about the area. If you are going to yell at me and tell me to do more homework before posting, sorry.

Chincoteague is a nice spot, although it is not right on the beach. The rest of the peninsula south of there has nice beaches, but they are all unpopulated barrier islands and only accessible by boat (or kayak). Also, the beaches at Chincoteague (and Assateague) are part of the Natl Wildlife Refuge System and are not really dog-friendly. I think they may even be prohibited. I mentioned this on another post, but with your dog, you should really look into Duck on the Outer Banks. It is all beach houses, but has a bit of "quaint" to the small village area, and you can let the dog run loose on the beach there no problems. Plus the Hatteras National Seashore is not far south and you have miles and miles of deserted beaches to roam if you want to-nobody in sight. You can't go wrong if you are going there to enjoy the beach and the ocean.

Outer Banks, for sure. Duck sounds ideal for you, I agree. But you can head further south down the OBX for even more beaches, even more deserted. Or visit Nags Head and Kitty Hawk if you need more activity.

PS - I realize that you are asking about Virginia and OBX is in North Carolina. But it's not that far, and I think OBX will be more of what you are looking for in a beach vacation.

The state beach at Assateague allows dogs but that is in the Maryland portion of Assateague. You might look at that area. You can stay in Ocean City Maryland, go to the state park for the beach and explore the charming towns in that area such as Berlin and Snow Hill.

(We only yell if we feel we've been saying the same things over and over and the answers can be found with a simple search)
