We traveled to Positano from Rome by taking the train to Salerno, and getting a car to the hotel.
If you haven't already been to the Amafli Coast, you simply do not want to drive while your there by yourself. I love to drive, but it is crazy on those roads.
In fact, getting a driver is a great way to get around in that part of the world. There are plenty of people willing to help and they know the area like the back of their hand.
I'm sure you will get more replies, including boat options as well.
Cheers,
Matt

There are several options.
If money is no object, you can hire a driver to take you all the way from Positano to Rome.
If money is tight, you have cheaper options. You don't say when you are making the trip. In the summer, there are boats from Positano to Naples, and from Naples you can take a train to Rome. That's how I did it when I took this trip, and it wasn't that difficult, and I enjoyed traveling by boat.
You can also take a bus or boat to Sorrento or Salerno, and take the Circumvesuviana train to Naples and then train to Rome. I think there are bus options to Naples also. Basically, you have several options to get to Naples (boat, bus, train), and then train from Naples to Rome.

PS -- Also, if you didn't want to deal with the bus/boat transfer in Naples, and money is only somewhat of an object, you could hire a driver from Positano to the Naples train station, and then train from Naples to Rome. That might be the easiest option, if you don't want to spend the money on a driver to take you all the way to Rome.
It all depends on your budget, how mobile you are, how easily you can handle your luggage, what time of year, whether you prefer to travel by land or by sea, etc.

Last month we did this trip both ways. The easiest if you are going to take the train is to travel from Rome to Salerno (2 hours) and then walk two blocks to the ferry and then take a very scenic ferry to Positano. Ferry ride is about 70 minutes and also stops in Amalfi. I did a lot of research and this was the fastest and easiest way to get to Rome to Positano and back. Going to Naples means you have to get in a taxi to get to the ferry-we preferred just walking to the ferry from Salerno train station.

You don't "have" to get a taxi -- there is a bus that goes from the dock to the Naples train station (and vv). But it's not walkable, and does require the extra transfer, and may be difficult for someone with a lot of luggage.

OK so it seems like the best options are
1. Driver from Positano to Naples. Trenitalia train from Naples to Rome. (Can anyone recommend a driver/company and average price for the trip to Naples? How long is the train ride?)
2.Take ferry/boat from Positano to Naples. Trenitalia train from Naples to Rome. (How much is the boat? Is there a website? Where in Positano does the boat depart? How long is the boat ride?)
Thank you!

"macdogmom" how do I boat from Positano? Where do you get the boat, how do I find out the schedules, the cost etc?
If I get a car service from Positano to Naples and then take the train to Rome isn't that the same amount of transfers (2) as is the boat?

Positano is very small. There is only one dock -- it's at the main beach and it's impossible to miss it. There are kiosks that sell tickets.
Here is a photo from the webcam that shows the beach and the little kiosks:

Yes, ferry service is easy to find in Positano. Here is link-
http://www.metrodelmare.net/
If you car service to Naples and then train it to Rome it will be the same amount of transfers. Difference is cost since car service is over 100 euros and ferry is around 10 euros. Ferry's only run in summer.

We took the fast train from Rome into Naples (1 hour and 10 minutes), and from there a driver picked us up and we drove to our hotel in Positano. We used Limousine Service Sorrento ( http://www.carsorrento.it/ ). They had the lowest price (85 euros), and service was perfect. He told us it is 350 Euros if he was to pick us up from Rome (to Positano).
