Fodor's is in the beginning stages of working on the first edition of a guidebook to Honduras. The travel, research, and writing will be on my and another writer's calendar for a good chunk of the summer. Oh, and we won't forget our editor. It will occupy her calendar too.

There's a good base of material to start with so far, since Honduras is a chapter in the Fodor's Central America guidebook, but expanding that into a book of its own means room for and need for many more listings.

We already have ideas of many places to add, but we're always happy to hear about any of your favorite must-see, must-stay, must-eat, must-shop places. Obviously, we'll do the legwork and investigate on the ground. Your suggestions are always welcome.

hi jeff, a friend and i stayed at casa de cafe (http://www.casadecafecopan.com/) in copan ruinas for a few nights in february. excellent value, beautifully designed , both accommodations and gardens and friendly, helpful staff and owners. it's a 5 minute walk to the plaza so convenient but away from the hurly burly. they support local coffee growers by serving and selling there coffee. my dad was in hospital and they allowed me use of their personal computer to make connections. lucia, who comes in to do massage has a great pair of hands

AndrewDavid, I appreciate the recommendation of Casa de Cafe. How nice that they let you stay in touch with the folks back home when circumstances required it. Thanks for the tip.

No wonder I couldn't find one by Fodor's at the local Borders today. Had to settle for Frommer's (eeek!)

I'm heading there in March of 2011 so they'll have to wait for any input from me or Janenicole.

Well, do post here after your trip, Mixter, and any pre-trip questions too. That's what this forum is for.

For Central America, Fodor's right now has single-country guidebooks to Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala and Belize. Honduras will be Number 5. There's a full Fodor's Central America guide with a chapter devoted to each of the seven countries.

The new Honduras book will also contain a chapter on sidetrips to El Salvador and Nicaragua.

I'm glad to hear you are publishing a more comprehensive book for Honduras. I prefer the format of the Fodor's guidebooks over others.

I think our plans for Honduras are coming together, but there always seems to be questions that come up, and of course we'll post on this forum. Afterall, it was on this forum that mixter603, lhgreenacres and myself "met" prior to arriving at Bosque del Cabo in CR, so not only does it help us with travel plans, but it provided us with great friends.

I'm sure the editors will appreciate knowing you like Fodor's guidebooks, Jane. I've been writing for them for 10 years, so the format and organization seems second-nature to me.

I have lived on the Island of Roatan, Honduras since 2007. There are too many things worth seeing on Roatan to give you just a suggestion or two. I have traveled to Honduras twice in the last two years. A group of six of us visited and we all loved Casa de Cafe too. It was very clean and offered a good breakfast. The owners were very friendly and offered us a ride into town in the back of their truck. It is a bit out of town but an easy walk or Tuk Tuk ride.They also own a little hostal and although I didn't go inside it looked very nice from the outside.
One thing I wouldn't miss if I went to Copan and had an extra day or two would be Finca Cisne. The Finca is a nice ride out of town(also in the back of a pickup) and the horses, food and coffee can't be beat. The owners son Carlo's run the tour and it wonderful. You can horseback ride, tour the coffee farm, have lunch at the main house, swim in the river, go to hotsprings and have a good night sleep.It's also very easy on the budget.
We also enjoyed Hacienda San Lucas.
We stayed at Omega Lodge both times we were in Ceiba. They run some very good tours and have rooms for every budget.
It's easy to take the ferry from Ceiba to Roatan and although it's a big ferry somehow I manage to get sick everytime.
Can't wait to see the book.

Ttraveler, one of the real treats about going to Copan is the town of Copan Ruinas, isn't it? It's a sweet little town that has so much in the way of lodging and dining and other facilities for tourists. I really like the place.

Hopefulist, so far I've only flown to the Bay Islands and have never taken the ferries. I bet the Dramamine is needed at times. (Enjoy your trip to Guatemala.)

The ferry between Roatan and Ceiba...I've taken it a few times.

From Roatan to Ceiba...not too difficult for my stomach to handle.
From Ceiba, back to Roatan...I'll only FLY from now on!

Yes, We did enjoy the town of Copas Ruinas.. especially the chocolate covered banana's for a quarter.
You can also buy coffee and cardamom and cardamom coffee from the Finca at one of the travel agencies in town. I think it was Via Ventura.

Villas Pico Bonito along the Rio Cangrejal is the most relaxing place in La Ceiba area. This paradise of beautifully landscaped gardens hide artistically decorated cabanas that overlook the river and the waterfalls in the national park. Great birding, good food, friendly and considerate staff.
Tesoros de Honduras: Made In Honduras Craft Market is in Trujillo, along the main road beside the stadium. It is owned and operated by the artists who make the products that are sold in the store. This is the best place to get your made in Honduras souvenirs: sea glass jewelry, calabash thumb drums, crocheted wire jewelry, unique coconut shell designs, beautiful bags, dolls, wood creations, and more.

Another writer was in charge of the Caribbean, Bay Islands, and Mosquitia chapters, so I'll be anxious to see when the book comes out if she got those places, Diane.
