Shoes for Alaska Cruise?
My family is going on an Alaska Cruise in July and I'm wondering what shoes I should wear for our 1.5 mile hike and walking around towns in general. I have some good hiking shoes but they are mesh sided (bought for Costa Rica). Will those work? I don't mind getting my feet a bit damp, but would leather workout shoes be a better bet?

Are you just doing a SE Alaska round trip or are you starting or ending in Southcentral AK, Whittier or Seward?
Regardless, in July you might encounter some wet trail conditions, but it's not going to be that cold anywhere, glacier hikes notwithstanding.
Wear shoes that you'd wear in comparable conditions elsewhere. It rains in many places in July; would you pack special shoes if you were going walking in the Calif. redwoods or at Big Sur?

Gardyloo, no I guess I wouldn't. These shoes are great for just about everything but cold & wet, and they are lightweight and dry quickly, and they don't look totally awful so I don't feel stupid wearing them. I think I will risk being cold just for those three days. The rest of the time we'll be on the ship, and in Vancouver.

Maybe I am missing something - and I admit I might be since we are not big hikers. But it's only 1.5 miles. We did a couple of longer hikes, a glacier helicopter landing/walk, walked around towns, on board, in Denali - wearing cross training type footwear and were perfectly fine. It was June, it rained some, was damp some, and my feet are normally cold everywhere - still fine.
You will probably do more walking in Vancouver than off-ship on the cruise. We loved Vancouver almost as much as Alaska.
