Getting to Venice... bus? train? boat?

Hello all,

I'm trying to figure out how to get to Venice, since my original plan of going by boat from Pula on the 18th of May is impossible since there are no boats on that day.

I have two questions:

If I leave from Slovenia, here is what I found (was looking for train, but seems to be only buses from Villach in Austria):

Ljubljana 19.05.10 departure at 07:27 D 314 Schnellzug
Villach Hbf 19.05.10 arrrval at 09:08 5b
Villach Hbf (Bussteige 1-4) departure at 10:56 Bus 833 ÖBB-Intercitybus
Venezia Piazzale Roma arrival at 14:25

If I return my car to Pula, there is a boat leaving from Rovinj or Porec on the day I must get to Venice. How easy is it to travel from Pula to Rovinj? We could plan to sleep in Rovinj for a night and leave by boat the next morning...

So basically, I'm wondering whether to return to Croatia to take a boat to Venice, or to leave from Slovenia and take a train/bus... (we are in Pula for 1 week, then 3 days in Slovenia, then 3 days in Venice).

What are your impressions?

Many thanks!

We have a thread going on this:

I took the DRD bus the other way from Mestre; going the opposite way should be even easier, since it should be easy to find the DRD bus at the Ljubljana bus/train station. At Mestre, just take a short train ride over to Venice Santa Lucia.

25 Euros one way for a direct bus, no stops (except for a break).

Can you drop your car somewhere other than Pula? Porec is the best bet. Spend the night there and get the boat in the morning.

Another possibility is flying from Pula to Venice. According to Expedia, you can do this for $391 with 2 stops en route.

And a whole week in Pula? It's the only town in Croatia I didn't like much. And it's poorly located for daytripping in Istria.

Actually, we are 2 couples and 2 kids and we rented a lovely villa about 20 minutes inland from Pula...

We are really trying to leave the car somewhere else than in Pula, specially in Rovinj since there is a boat leaving on Wednesday like we want. But this seems very complicated in Croatia!

Thanks Andrew and monte07 for the info! I guess we are not out of options!

merci!

Then leave the car in Rovinj. It's only half an hour ride between those two cities. If not you can always take the bus from Pula to Rovinj. Check the timetable @ http://www.autobusni-kolodvor.com/en/default.aspx
