Flights from Flores to Guatemala City Dependable?
We are thinking of taking a TACA 8am flight from Flores to Guatemala City on the same day as we fly back out to the U.S. Our outbound flight is at 12:30pm, so this allows for at least a 3-hour layover. The next flight from Flores gets in after our outbound flight leaves, so there is only the one flight that works. This makes me a little nervous though, as previously I have managed to get myself in some serious jams by trying to do something similar in countries where air or train timetables are really just sort of guidelines. I've resolved to never again do what I propose above, but it would be by far the most efficient way to schedule our trip to Tikal.
So, what do you think, good idea or bad idea?

I did that exact thing in August, 2007 and sent 8 or 10 friends that route in August, 2009 while the rest of us headed into Belize. I was worried both times but no problems. If you're traveling at a busier time I'd worry a bit more but you'd probably still be ok. There have been a few stories of groups getting bumped; be sure to confirm and get to the airport early (at least 2 hours ahead). Good luck!

My flight from GUA to FRS was cancelled and I'm having to take the next flight which is several hours later, and will miss events planned for that day. In light of this, I would leave lots of wiggle room for something as important as a connection to an international flight.
Make sure you have a good Plan B.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. We decided to stick with our original plan and it all worked out just fine. Our TACA flight left Flores and arrived in Guate on time, leaving us plenty of leeway for our flight out of the country. So, at least this time, everything worked out just fine. We had a great trip, of which Tikal was a major highlight!

I'm glad that worked for you as it has for me in th past. I hope you'll post a trip report for us! I travel in the summer so this time of year I hang on every word when people tell about their adventures.
