chicago to toronto by train

This is but the first question of what may be several. My wife and I are thinking of the "Canadian" tour from Toronto to Vancouver next September, as part of a trip from Orlando, FL to Chicago to Toronto and from Vancouver to Seattle and back to Florida.

Can anyone give us some info on a train from Chicago, IL to Toronto?

I don't believe there are any passenger trains that cross the Detroit river. I think you will have to get off the Amtrak, cross the border, and then get on the Canadian rail system. But I'm not sure, hopefully someone else has answers.

Did you check the Amtrak website?

According to it, you go from Chicago to Buffalo and then change trains to go to Toronto. The entire trip is scheduled to take just over 21.5 hours.

Joe, in case you're still mulling over this, Cranachin's advice of using Amtrak's website is fine for taking the train via Buffalo, but will not include the option of training to Detroit, cabbing across to Windsor and then catching VIA Rail from there. However, this was a rare case of the Canada forum moving more quickly than the US forum... based on advice over there, I think Joe has decided to fly...

There used to be one train a day from Toronto to Chicago and back, but it doesn't run any more. Amtrak only goes from Port Huron (in Michigan) to Chicago. I don't know if you can cab across the bridge at Port Huron to get you to to the Via Rail station in Sarnia or if there is some other connection. Going through Sarnia seems like it would be shorter than going all the way to Buffalo.
