Best Milford Cruise Time

Which cruise time is the best and why? I am thinking the Mitre Peak Cruise at 1:50 since I've heard the tour buses are gone at this time. Is there one in the morning that is before the tours arrive? We would also like to do the observatory so I don't think we'll be able to do any of the evening cruises. Am I right on this? Thanks!

Hi Rachel -

1:50 pm is probably an OK time, although the buses aren't all gone by then. We arrived in Milford around 4 pm, and the last of the buses were on their way out.

We really enjoyed our 4:30 pm cruise on Mitre Peak the last time we were in Milford - it was the final cruise of the day, and there were only about 12 of us. No one else in the sound, as the other boats had finished for the day.

I don't know about the observatory though, we only did a cruise.

What time you go will also depend on where you're staying, as it's a long drive back to Queenstown if you're only there for the day.

We were staying in Te Anau, so the drive back wasn't an issue.

It looks like the earliest Mitre Peak cruise departs at 8:50. Personally, I'd choose the first or the last cruise of the day. I'd avoid anywhere from about 10:30-1:30, as that seems to be the busiest time for the buses.

Thanks for your advice. We're staying in Milford sound that night so the last cruise of the day wouldn't be an issue. I just want to make sure we are able to see the observatory as well. I'll do a little more research on what time that opens and closes. While I am picking your brain (and I'll post another thread on this as well), can I ask you about outlets? Where are you from? We are from the US and need to figure out what type of outlet converter to get. Any recommendations? Thanks again!

Hi Rachel -

I'm from the US, but I live in Australia...

NZ outlets look this this:

http://no1guide.co.nz/about-new-zeal...plugs-738.html

Note that the third pin is a grounding pin, adaptors with just the two diagonal pins work also.

Radio Shack in the US should have what you need, and they'll be cheaper there than in NZ.
