Hello -

I am a little confused about reserving at Lascaux II. I understand that the tickets can be purchased at a tourist office in Montignac. However, do I drive to Montignac to purchase the tickets a few days in advance, or is it possible to buy the tickets on the same day I want to visit Lascaux II?

In the alternative, can I call Lascaux II directly to reserve and then pick up the tickets there before the tour?

Also, if someone could post a link or advise of schedule of tours in English, I would certainly appreciate it.

You call (from the USA) 011-33-553-05-65-60 to make a reservation. You pick the tickets up at the tourist office.

I think it depends on when you want to visit,. I called about 2 weeks ago to reserve for yesterday, and was told to call back 4-5 days before. when I called back, I was told that they are not taking any more advance reservations on the phone for this period. 5o in Les Eyzies, I asked the tourist office if I could go to Montignac to buy tickets for 2 days time, and I was incorrectly told that you can only buy for tickets on the same day. We went yesterday and I asked at the ticket window if you can buy in advance and the answer is yes. There is a separate window for advance bookings next to the regular window. If you can get there a day or two before you plan to visit, I recommend it. We got there early-we were there at 9:30 and only 2 people before me in line, but the next English tour was for 11:40. So we just spent 90 minutes walking around Montignac...and by 11 there was a huge line for the tickets. This is the very latest info available...enjoy your visit.

Here is an update. There is no answer at the number above. There is a "speed of light" kind of a recorded message and we could not get it.

Husband called 011-33-553-51-96-23 number someone mentioned and was advised by a person that no reservations were accepted over the phone but that one could purchase tickets a few days in advance at the tourist office in either Beynac or Montignac.

A litle frustrating to say the least. Any other ideas?

I see that these replies, though helpful, are nearly 5 years old so I was going to ask about Lascaux II. What hours is the tourist office open in Montignac? Would mid-May on a Wednesday be considered off season? We are staying in a hotel close to the cave. How far from there is the tourist office in town?

The cave is a couple of kilometers from town. Without knowing exactly where your hotel is, can't specify.

Thanks. We are actually staying very close to the cave at the Hotel Le Lascaux 0n Jean Jaures in Montignac.

The cave is outside of town in the woods. There are no hotels there. Your hotel is on the biggest thoroughfare in town, the D704.

Yuk. That is not what I got from the description from the hotel. Is that not a good hotel and could you recommend a better one? (on a budget but will pay up to 95 euros for the night). And how far is this hotel from the cave and from the Visitors center where you buy the cave tickets? Sorry for so many questions! Thanks.

There are street views from the hotel on a bunch of google sites. You can see for yourself. The D704 is a departmental road that runs along the river, crosses it at Montignac, and runs south from there. I know nothing about actually staying in hotels in the area as I have a home nearby and don't need hotels, but if I were going to stay in Montignac, I'd choose La Rosearaie (and I have no idea about prices, but it's the Dordogne, so it's probably not terribly expensive). It's a really sweet place with a lovely garden restaurant. There may be other recommendable places; I can investigate and ask around if you like. There's also La Table du Terroir in nearby La-Chapelle-Aubareil, which is a classic sort of country inn in a lovely countryside village near Montignac that is in a tiny village and has a restaurant that serves classic cuisine grandemère. It's maybe a 15-minute drive to Lascaux but is a great experience.

Just to confirm information about tickets - you must buy them in person: mid-April to mid-September, in the centre of Montignac, and other dates, at the site, outside of Montignac. Usually you get them for the same day.

It used to be that you could phone and reserve tickets, but it seems like the system changes from year to year. When I phoned and asked could I reserve and then pick them up, the person on the phone talked to me as if I was from outer space, even though I had done that the year before.
