Oregon Coast Trip Report

We have been having a wonderful time here in Seaside at our beach cottage the past week. The sun is shining and it is warm, warm, warm here! Here are some highlights of our past few days:

Lunch at King Estate Winery out on the terrace

Clam chowder and Razor Clams at Norma's Ocean Diner

Sunset drive back to Indian Beach @ Ecola State Park

Riding bikes on the prom here in Seaside, shopping and eating Pronto Pups and Butter Pecan Waffle Cones

Going to Astoria, we saw the fishermen catch a 82" Sturgeon, lunch yesterday at Fort George was wonderful, loved the Rockfish tacos and enjoyed riding our bikes along the riverfront in the sunshine

BBQ Ribs, Bruschetta and our homemade wine at Bigfoot Pub & Grub, love the friendly and efficient staff here

Relaxing on our deck with a glass of Vin Glace that we purchsed at King Estate Winery after our lunch

Long walks on the beach, morning noon and night!

Shopping at the Seaside outlets, love the kitchen store there where we purchased some cool glasses for smoothies which we have been making enjoying daily for breakfast on our deck in Seaside

Sunning, tanning and relaxing on the beach, today is especially warm with gorgeous blue, blue skies

Bell Bouy for fresh Prawn and Crab cocktails, love this place!

Crab melts at the Cannery Cafe in Astoria, we dined out on their deck and took in the gorgeous views of the Columbia River

Just a few highlights of our time here so far, we are on the coast for an extended stay, love, love, love the beauty of the area here! ***kim***

mms - it's 106 at my house too - on both thermometers! Doesn't look like there's much cooling in the next few days.

I had a great trip today! I was lucky enough to be invited by a private pilot friend of mine to fly from Portland to Astoria, down to Cannon Beach and then home again. It was a beautiful day for flying, no marine air once we got to the beach - and much cooler up in the plane than on the ground when we landed!! Loved that trip, and hope to be able to do that again before summer is over. We flew over Haystack Rock - but abided by the rules and did not get any closer than allowed.

I took lots of pictures, but haven't downloaded them yet - sure hope that at least some of t hem turn out well.

My Dad had his pilot's license and I used to fly to the beach with him when I was a kid. Of course way back then, it was all about the Life Savers he bought me before the flight, and the hot chocolate afterwards. My Mom never flew with us, and had a rule - either my brother or I could go - but NEVER both at the same time.

balitrav--That sounds like so much fun! I would love to see the pics. A close friend in WA has their own plane and they come down here and pick us up and fly us back. Gotta love generous people like that!!! We saw a plane in Newport last summer that was literally skimming the beach...we got out of it's way

106 degrees, yikes, that is what we have been having here in the Sacramento Valley! I hope you have air conditioning mms and balitrav. My family in Portland had a/c installed when they got their new heater system a couple of years ago but I worry about the younger family with the little toddler as they don't have a/c.

A private plane is so much fun. My cousin's husband had one years ago and he invited to join him a few times. Good memories!

Yep, 106 according to the thermometer in my car as I was driving home from a spinning class a few minutes ago. Thank God that class was in an air conditioned room!!

Kim, wasn't it Bigfoot Pub & Grub where you took your own wine glasses a few years ago? Did your homemade wine warrant that same special treatment?

Thanks for that update kimamom. My husband and I are planning to drive along the Oregon coast from September 5-14. We have never been to that part of the country and you have given us some ideas. I can't wait.

LoveItaly--Yes, we have central air, thank goodness! Lots of cooling shelters are open over here, but for people like Kim visiting the coast, they don't need that.

robinmich--Beachbum is the "go-to" person for OR coast info. He is good at really listening to what someone wants to do/see and then making suggestions based on that, not just his personal favorites.

Thanks robinmich, you will love this area. Last night we took a drive over the Astoria-Megler bridge and had a nice dinner at the Shelburne Inn, really yummy oyster stew, Caprese salad and salmon here. The marionberry pie was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Very pretty scenery driving over to this area from Seaside. Looks like we're going to have another gorgeous day on the coast today! More updates later. ***kim***

My son in Portland said yesterday he'd prefer the weather here. We're in Alaska--66 and raining yesterday.

Nice and cool here on the coast, I wore a sweater to dinner at Newman's in Cannon Beach last night. For those visiting CB, I highly suggest a meal at Newman's, we were seated upstairs at a table by window, very romantic place with Sterling Silver roses on the tables, I enjoyed the Grilled Romaine Salad and the Crab Cakes with a glass of French wine, the Amaretto Pot de Creme for dessert was excellent. ***kim***

Hi mms,I finally downloaded my pictures from the flight I took last week from Portland to the beach. Here are a few of them. The first one is of Tillamook Lighthouse, the second one is Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, and the third and fourth are pictures of the coastline somewhere between Cannon Beach and Astoria.

Thanks for the compliments mms! I was actually pretty surprised at how well they turned out. I'm not an expert photograhper by any means - lol!! With the vibration of the plane, and flying past what I was trying to take pictures of - I was amazed that they turned out as well as they did. I actually have about 100 photos of the trip - of course no one but me would like to see them!

We were at Cannon Beach Saturday and Sunday, and I was pretty happy that we were up flying on the day we flew. Yesterday was fine, but today there was quite a bit of marine air on shore. There is no way I could have taken the pictures I took with all that marine air.

We're back home now, - sure is hot - at least for Portland area temperatures. Hope that you had a nice weekend!

Sounds like a wonderful trip! How did you find your beach cottage? Do you have pictures of it, and can you post your information on how to find it? Thanks!

We had a nice Italian meal this past Sat. night at the Taste of Tuscany here in Seaside, we love to dine in the adults only area, very quiet and romantic. Yesterday after church we headed over to Astoria to the Sunday market where we picked up some fresh basil, tomatoes, Walla Walla onions and some yummy boysenberry pie. We made tomato soup yesterday which was wonderful for the cool weather here.

Last night we rode our bikes over to Bigfoot Pub & Grub for some BBQ ribs. Time for a walk on the beach, Seaside is full of families and tourists havin a wonderful time, life is good close to the sea! ***kim***

Ok, what does marine air on shore mean? I'm in land-locked Oklahoma and am not familiar with that term. My sis lives in Astoria, so I love to read trip reports from the Oregon coast. I'm headed up there next summer. I kind of hope you have warm weather again while I'm visiting.
