Hongkong and Lamma Island
Can anyone recommend a hotel (with a website) on Lamma Island ?
Just returned from 10-days in Honkers, after a 35 year absence. Loved it and want to go back, and spend more time - but especially loved Lamma Island where I'd like to spend several days.........

I have never heard of a hotel on Lamma. There is a lot of accommodation for rent there, but I think it would be difficult to get a short term rental.
There is a hotel, The Warwick, on Cheung Chow and a number of hotels on Lantau, including on in Silvermine Bay

Guyvaron has written the above same reply on all three of his/her only posts. I would assume then that guyvaron has something to do with Accor Hotels and therefore what s/he has written can be taken with a grain of salt. NB Commercial posts are not allowed

LOL..I agree with you, ivenotbeeneverwhere!!! And I doubt if ACCOR have any! And I have found one at http://www.lammaresort.com/resort_e.html which looks OK. Butr more are welcome by way of comparison...and I don't expect to find a Marriot, Hilton, Oberoi or Hyatt!!!

I was on Lamma last year and saw nothing that looked like a true hotel. There are only about 8000-9000 people on the whole island, no cars, so a home stay might be your best bet. Be prepared to bike or walk. It's a wonderful place, though, and so different from HK Island.

Mitch, there are a small number of hotels on Lamma, and also some guesthouse apartments. I am traveling today and don’t have access to my notes, but if you do a search you may find links to accommodations. The main “hotel” that is probably the nicest (have not seen the rooms however, but their beachfront restaurant is quite popular) is on Hung Shing Ye Beach beach. I can’t recall the name of the hotel off the top of my head. This hotel and very pretty beach is about a 20 minute walk from Yung Shue Wan, where the ferry from Central docks. (It’s a car-free island.) There is a pretty-wel known roasted pigeon restaurant here too. The beach is only slightly marred by the presence of the huge HK Electric plant at the far end, but you can’t see it from all parts of the beach. The other hotels and guest houses are in So Ku Wan.
The “resort” link you found is, I believe, a series of apartments located in Yung Shue Wan. It’s not really a hotel as such. It’s also not beach front, but is in the little village and could be interesting. If memory serves, this is located just a few feet from the ferry pier in Yung Shue Wan (have passed it but never been inside.)
I think staying on Lamma is great if you do not plan on doing touring in Hong Kong every day, but just want to soak up the much quieter atmosphere of Lamma. There are some very good walks and some nice beaches. There is a good-sized community in the two main towns plus, some smaller villages, including a fair number of expats who live there because rents are much more reasonable (some people have weekend beach flats there too.) While there is frequent ferry service to Hong Kong (esp on weekends) I would not call it an ideal place to stay if you only plan to stay a few days and your intent is to see Hong Kong or other outlying islands, as you may be doing more commuting than you want. But going into Hong Kong for the odd day of sightseeing is certainly possible.
There are some hotels on Lantau as well, I would avoid Mui Wo as its rather grotty (although there is one sort of good hotel outside of town), IMO, but there are a few basic hotels along South Lantau Road that would give beach access and might be a good base for exploring Lantau which again has excellent walks and lots of little places to discover. Bike rental is also possible there (should be possible on Lamma but that hillier and smaller.) You also have Tung Chung which is a large urban centre with grocery stores, restaurants, shopping etc if you want that. (Lamma does not offer much other than some restaurants in the two main towns.)
I will repost when I return to Hong Kong with some links to hotels on Lamma and Lantau. You might also try vrbo.com and see if anything on Lamma or Lantau comes up.

Tung Chung is a great place to stay in Hongkong.
From airport, bus #S1, fare HK$3.5, arrives Tung Chung in 15 minutes.
Tung Chung has a subway station, it takes less than 30 minutes to the center of the city.
Other than Novotel Tung Chung, private apartments like Seaview Crescent or Coastal Skyline always have short term rentals.
There are restaurants, supermarkets and factory outlets in the area.
Ngong Ping 360 Skyrail runs between Tung Chung and the Big Buddha on top of Lantau Island.
What I loved most to do in Tung Chung was to take the ferry from Tung Chung to Tun Mun.
There's an Indian food outlet at Tung Chung pier with good curry.
Tun Mun pier has a waterfront promenade lined with small sidewalk food outlets.
I would sit in one of the "Cha chaan teng", get a cup of "panty hose" tea with carnation milk & watch the sunset.

For Lantau, other than the three international chain hotels at or near the airport, the most “upscale” hotel is the Silvermine Beach Hotel, see http://www.resort.com.hk, I have not seen the rooms there. You might also try the Fair View Inn in tiny Tung Fuk, which is near a very nice beach and is a rather interesting village area IMO (no website tel 852- 2980- 2525.) I have eaten at the restaurant at the Fair View Inn and the inn itself looks very tidy, although I have not seen the rooms. Finally, try Long Coast Water Sports at http://www.longcoast.hk/engpage/. This is on very lovely Lower Cheng Sha Beach and is next to the Stoep Restaurant. This place is a rental center for water equipment; again I have not seen their rooms, I think they are pretty basic. I did find a link to a house for rent near Pui O, I don’t know anything about it, but see http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/property/shortlets/ and scroll down for the link to Pui O/Lantau. I mentioned it for the fact that it could be a place to shop for food, get to a drugstore, etc if staying elsewhere on Lantau, which is quite rural outside of Tung Chung. (One could also stay in Discovery Bay on Lantau which is a purpose-built leisure community with its own ferry service. It’s not far from Disney.) Lamma does not have a grocery store, there are one or two small provision shops in Yung Shue Wah, but mostly you would be eating in local restaurants for meals if you stayed on Lamma, or grocery shopping in Hong Kong and carrying it out to Lamma yourself.

Silvermine Beach Hotel is a love hotel with few tourists.
Houses with "House for rent/sale" signs are all over Pui O, Cheung Sha & Tong Fuk all year round.
They don't seem too well maintained from Hongkong standard.
Transportation is extremely convenient in Lantau making Tung Chung still the #1 choice to lodge.
Hongkong Disneyland is only one stop from Tung Chung MRT station.

Discovery Bay is out.
Like the Americans moving to the suburbs in the 60s & 70s,
the pendulum is swinging back toward urban living.
More people want to move out from Discovery Bay than people who want to move in.

I can't believe the crappola I've found, which is only slightly worse than what I haven't found while trying to help a friend find accommodation here. I'd let him stay with me, but my sister-in-law beat him to the punch.
