Hi, fergie. We did the same trip last year, and you might find some good information in my thread:

Rather than to drive via Idaho Falls, we like the route through Logan, Montpellier, Grover, and Etna. Either drive takes about 5 hours without stops.

Here's another vote for Logan, Montpellier, Grover, and Etna. Very nice communities, and don't forget Bear Lake.

I also agree on the Logan, Montpellier route. It is much more scenic than I-15 and, depending on when you are there, if the ice cream store at USU in Logan is open, it is very, very good.

I drive this route every summer and I have found the fastest way is to take I-80 to Evanston and then hwy 89 to Jackson (via beautiful Star Valley and Alpine)- usually takes me 4.5 hours. The Logan/Montepelier route is scenic too, but takes longer IMO.

If you go to Bear Lake have the blueberry shakes. I assumed I would find them again later, but no luck!

dwooddon, more info please on the ice cream store in Logan. Where would I find it?

It's on the Utah State University campus and is run by the USU dairy science dept (USU is, among other things, very heavily oriented toward agricultural education). The ice cream store is in the front of the building at 750 N 1200 E on the USU campus. See http://www.usu.edu/aggieicecream/.

Someone may make better ice cream than they do but if so, I don't know who. It's a good thing I only get back to Logan once or twice a year or I'd look even more like a blimp than I do now.

Their web site shows their hours as
May to September October to April
Mon-Fri 9am-10pm Mon-Fri 9am-9pm
Saturday 10am-10pm Saturday 10am-9pm
Sunday Closed

Thanks, dwooddon. I have been known to go considerably out of my way for good ice cream. I already have a planned stop at the Iceberg when I land in SLC.
