Lubeck or Schwerin for the day?

Lubeck or Schwerin for the day?
we will be arriving by cruise ship in Warnemunde in August from 8am to 10 pm on a Saturday.. want to spend the time to explore either Schwerin, the site of the BUGA ( German Flower Show) and castle or head to Lubeck, the UNESCO city.
we are told that we can visit both locations and it is possible to take the train. Do you think it is a good idea to visit both locations? or if not which place would be the best choice?
would love some feedback concerning both locations. thanks

I think Luebeck is more scenic than Schwerin.
But from Warnemuende I would tend to go to Schwerin rather than Luebeck. If there is time left after your visit there (and most likely there will be), you could still spend time in either Rostock, or tour the fine minster in Bad Doberan close to Rostock, a particularly good example of North German red-brick churches.

Lübeck and Schwerin together are too much in one day. We have looked up connections for someone recently and that meant no more than two hours in Lübeck including the walk from the train station into the old town and back - which is close to nothing. You'll bite your *insert body part of your choice* for having to leave so soon.
Either spend the whole day in Lübeck, or pick Schwerin, but not both. If you absolutely want to do two destinations, combine Schwerin with another place that is closer to Warnemünde.
Options are the already mentioned Bad Doberan or, if you want some hanseatic brick gothic, Wismar, or maybe Güstrow. This saves quite a bit of travel time because you don't have to go further west.

The train from Warnemünde to Lübeck takes about 2:30. From Lübeck to Schwerin about 1:10 and from Schwerin to Warnemünde 1:30.
So, if you take the 8:39 from Warnemünde (you have to hurry with deboarding), you will be in Lübeck at 10:54. You can spend about 4 hours in Lübeck which will give you a good impression of this fine medieval city.
You leave Lübeck at 15:04 and arrive at Schwerin at 16:10. You visit the castle (which is open until 18:00), stroll through the park (the flower show is right around the castle) and board the train at 18:37 arriving in Warnemünde at 20:04. This gives you a reasonable time buffer before the vessel departs (the next train arrives at 21:19 which might be a little tight).
If you cut your stay by one hour in Lübeck, you can spend one hour more in Schwerin.
IMO, this is doable. Since Schwerin is (almost) on the way to Lübeck, it is reasonable to split the train ride which gives you time to relax a bit.

To each his own, but I would save some time to enjoy the beach scene at Warnemuende instead of chasing Luebeck. I was there at the end of May and the beach life was really enjoyable & lively. I've never seen so much great windsurfing and kite surfing in my life. The town is filled with tourists shops & restaurants just like Luebeck but with more beach life. Luebeck is an OK destination but you may want to reconsider whether it's worth the long train rides and transfers via Rostock & Schwerin. I recommend buying the regional train pass to save money and time as well as to give you time flexibility if you decide to do all the train rides.

Thanks to traveller1959, my wife and I did exactly what you recommended, we had a wonderful time visiting both places.
We arrived in Lubeck at 10:54, did a two hours local English tour (available Saturday only at 11:30am) which finishes at 1:30pm. We then took 14:02 train (a little hurry here because the tour finished in City Hall which is a good 20 minutes away) and arrived Schwerin at 15:12. We went to the castle which is magnificent. We actually had time to sit down in the plaza and drank some local beer.
We then took 18:12 train and back in Warnemunde at 20:08, we then took a little stroll there and got back to ship before 9pm
I need to point out there is no direct train from Warnemunde to any other city, you have to take local train to Rostar first. Also, from Lubeck to Schwerin will need to transfer in Bad Kleinen as well which is not very convenient.
But Lubeck is wonderful town to visit and worth all the trouble!

I've been to both and liked em both - Schwerin is yes smaller and more easily done in a half day (plus the garden show with which I am not familiar) - and the castle on the lake great. Lubeck combined with Schwerin yes would be too much it seems.
