Though the ship is well air conditioned and our tour vans will have A/C is the heat more opressive than say NYC, Boston, LA ,etc. in the period Aug.15-Sept.2? We can handle heat unless we are dripping after walking for 15-20 minutes through a church or around leather shops in Florence, for example?

Yes it is. Semper paratus. But if you're coming from an air-conditioned ship in an air-conditioned van you're about 200% luckier than the rest of the folks who'll be visiting.

Florence is HOT and muggy, but at least it tends to cool down decently at night. If you survive the day you'll be fine. Sicily and Istanbul are VERY VERY hot, and Istanbul feels 200 times hotter with all the traffic weighing down the air. Take advantage of the beach!

Muggy,oppressive and miserable come to mind so bring your water bottles;change of shirts;wear hats and be lucky the ship is A/C. Have fun!
