Milan and Rome with children

I'm new to this board, so please be kind if I accidentally break any protocols.

My husband and I are traveling to Sarajevo to visit family for the month of April, 2010. We will be flying into Milan and flying home from either Milan or Rome (we're still deciding how we will get to Sarajevo from IT). Either way, we'll be spending a few days in Rome on the way home (DEFINITELY avoiding Holy Week!).

Our children will be 5.5, 3.5, and 1.5 at the time of travel. We are trying to get ideas on where we could stay with them, particularly in Rome, that would be family friendly and budget minded for sure. We have done lots of hostels and are definitely fine with that, in a private room of course. Money is an issue, but we're not high maintenance so we can sacrifice on frills.

I am at the VERY beginning of planning this trip, so any and all advice is welcome. If you have anything to offer about traveling from Italy to Croatia and up into Bosnia, feel free to offer that too.

Thank you!
karen

I suggest you get an apartment. You'll have more space, can cook for yourselves (even if it's just breakfast in the morning and soup in the evening) and it would probably be cheaper. For example, we paid about 125euro per night for a small, centrally located apartment for 2 adults and 2 kids last year. It wasn't glamorous but we didn't need that. Most prefer at least three nights I think.

This is great advice, I hadn't thought of it. Can you recommend a good place to search apartment listings?

Thanks again!

If you search for 'apartments rome' in google you'll find heaps. There are specialist agencies who deal with the short term tourist market or some owners advertise direct. For Rome we used sleepinitaly and found them fine. 10% deposit and rest in cash on arrival. Only problem we found was that the directions were a bit dodgy (but we found it without too much drama). It does help to have a mobile phone to arrange checkin (not essential) and sometimes they like to have an approximate arrival time as the owner often does not live onsite.

ps. Once you've worked out which apartments you're interested in you can either get a paper map or use google maps to locate it and where it is relative to the metro, tourist sights, etc.
