Travelilng across Kansas on I 70

Not too much, IMO. The Eisenhower Library and Museum are in Abilene as is a touristy block supposedly replicating the area when Abilene was a destination for the Texas cattle drives. I do, however, enjoy visiting Kansas City.
Fort Riley, between Salina and Topeka was, at one time, the home of the 10th and 11th Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers) and has a long history. I've never been but I'm sure they would have a military museum on or near the post.
You haven't said when you're traveling but if you stop at Fort Riley and they do have a museum, stop back on this thread and let us know how you liked it. I'll be in that area in mid-June for a day or two so a stop might be in order.

dwooddon,We will be traveling east through Kansas toward the end of May. Thanks for your reply . We may check out Eisenhower library and museum, we are planning on checking out Clinton's on the way out west. My husband may enjoy Fort Riley, I will pass that on to him, I will let you know if we stop. Thanks again.

Why not do something a little different and take US-24 out of Colby if eastbound and see some of the Kansas country side up close. It will look a lot different if you are off the I-highway. We have taken this route several times. When you get to the eastern part of the state drop south a few miles and visit Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth. You could plan a stop in Nicodemus in west central Kansas.

bcity, It depends a lot on what interests you and how far off I-70 you are willing to go. Almost every little town has something interesting.
Lawrence has a wonderful downtown with a main street (Massachusetts Avenue) that still has real stores and many interesting restaurants. There are some good museums at the University of Kansas.
Topeka has free tours of the State Capitol Building (just blocks off he interstate), many other museums and Great Overland Station. You should also stop by C.W. Porubsky Grocery and Meats and get some of the horseradish pickles they have been making for the past 61 years.
A stop at Fort Riley alone could easily fill a day: Wounded Knee & Great War Memorials, Old Trooper Monument & the grave of Chief (the US Army's last Cavalry Horse), U. S. Cavalry Museum, Fort Riley Regimental & Constabulary Museum, Custer House Museum, self guided walking & driving tours, and First Territorial Capitol of Kansas.
Junction City (at one side of the post) has several good Korean Restaurants. Manhattan (at the other side of the post) has a nice little zoo, interesting restaurants, a good free art museum and the Kansas State University gardens and bug zoo.
There is a much larger zoo (Rolling Hills) just west of Salina and only 3-4 miles off I-70..
If you enjoy folk art, you should visit Lucas, the Grassroots Arts Capital of Kansas. It has the world famous Garden of Eden, Grass Roots Arts Center and other attractions - all within walking distance of each other. Also visit the 83 year old Brant's Meat Market and get some of their homemade Czech bologna, and wonderful smoked link sausages. The beautiful 15 mile drive up to Lucas is through post rock country and along Lake Wilson.
The Cathedral of the Plains is a couple of miles south of the Interstate at Victoria. You will spot the twin towers from miles away.
The Sternberg Museum of Natural History (in Hays, right next to I-70) displays dinosaur and other fossils from the area and life size recreations.
Castle Rock Badlands are about 12 miles south of I-70. Beautiful 70 feet tall sedimentary formations of Niobrara Chalk. The Chalk Pyramids, farther west are also cool. Both are on undeveloped ranch land that will make it feel like you discovered them.
There are many unique dining opportunities within a two or three miles of I-70, all across the state, including: Salina's Cozy Inn with its tiny burgers that are prepared on the same 86 year old grill used since the restaurant opened in 1922, Brookville Hotel Restaurant in Abeline which serves only family style chicken dinners, or the Bunker Hill Cafe serving beef, elk & buffalo steaks in a neat old limestone building.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I will copy them and do some research. We will need a break from the interstate, so hopefully some of these will work into our schedule. Keith, thanks for the resturant suggestions and again thanks to all who contributed.

Traveling from St Louis to Kansas City ... there is a Antique Store off exit 155 it does have a large selection of New items .... but worth the stop ...
Exit 137 is the Artichoke Annes Antique Mall - one of the best I have been to in a long time!! Large 30,000 sq ft and quality items!! If you can only stop at one pick this one!!
If you need a meal eat in Columbia as after that locations are very spread out!!!
