Carmel/Big Sur Hotel Advice
I'm considering hotels for mid September. I will be coming from San Simeon and would like to stay one night in Big Sur and two nights in Carmel before heading through Half Moon Bay to SFO for a late flight. I would love to have an ocean view if possible. Any opinions on Tickle Pink, La Playa, Highlands Inn and Ventana Inn?
As always, thank you for your help!

I've stayed at Ventana Inn several times. It is a very beautiful, romantic resort. However, call them and ask how much the recent forest fires have or have not diminished the scenery. Another place in Big Sur that often shows up on the top ten lists of resorts world wide is the Post Ranch. Tickle Pink and Highlands Inn are high up on a cliff above the beautiful Carmel coastline. La Playa is in a residential area of Carmel-by-the-Sea just a few blocks from the famous village and a few blocks above Carmel beach. Not all rooms in all these resorts have ocean views, so you will need to specifically request that ( and of course pay a high premium as well). Call well in advance to get those rooms.

Ventana Inn is one of our favorites. Beautiful place and stunning setting. Excellent restaurant. Not all rooms have ocean view, so ask. I know a fire last year came very close so hopefully someone who's been in the area since then can provide an update.
Some friends rate the Post Ranch Inn a little higher, but we haven't been there yet.
Also liked the Highlands Inn. Great location and very nice rooms. Have heard good reviews of Tinkle Pink, but we haven't stayed there.

Do you think Ventana Inn will give me an honest answer?
There's a very BIG difference in price between Post Ranch and VI. Andrew8 loves to go there and stay in the treehouse.
I read another poster's questions about staying in Carmel and driving. I expect to drive to sights (aquarium, 17 mile drive, etc), but when it comes to driving at night to dinner, is there a hotel I should avoid because of any night difficulty?

You can do the yurts in Big Sur at TreeBones Resort instead of Post Ranch Inn..though we love them both..complete opposite $$ amounts..
We stayed at the Hyatt Carmel Highlands for 3 days and that was nice..we had a 2 bedroom oceanview but $$.
Hear that the Tickle Pink is a good deal..TT Tess lives up there and is good at the scoop around town..hope she chimes in!

We'll be glad to!
I think they'll give you an honest answer.
Yes, the treehouse is well worth it. Great accommodations and views.
We've never found the night driving that difficult. You have to be alert when you drive that highway regardless of day or night IMO. So, no, I don't think there's a hotel you should avoid for that reason.

ksucat - thanks for that link. What an interesting place and incredible location. Alas, my sharing bath accommodations are long over!
Stu - let's hope not; then we all lose. Big time.

Hi, we have stayed at all of the places on your list except Ventana, we just stayed at La Playa earlier this month in a King Patio Room, this is a lovely place to stay in Carmel. Let me know if you have any questions on the rooms, service, etc. There is a fantastic pool at La Playa and Highland's Inn! ***kim***
