April to May or September to October.
I'd settle for April or May myself.
All the spring flowers will be out and the crowds will not have arrived. In May, the days will also be quite long.
It is also pre-midge if you are visiting Scotland.

Late May/ early June for Scotland. A leetle bit wamer; a leetle bit more settled; and very few flowers lost

Agreed - my favorite trip there was in early June. Weather in Scotland was... warmish (coming from a Southerner), and in England it was comfortable. Not crowded at all. We were in Edinburgh, Stirling, the Lake District and London, and everywhere was beautiful.

We went to England and Wales in early May; many days were overcast and cool, which I really enjoyed.

I agree, May and June are lovely in Scotland and Northern England, but you never can predict the weather, it may be anything from quite cold to warm, so choose your clothing accordingly. Think in layers that you can put on or take off as needed. A good raincoat is a must too.

The weather, especially in Scotland is such that it may be raining where you are, but just drive a few miles and the sun might be shining. It changes at the drop of a hat. Which is actually part of the country's charm.

I love Scotland in any weather, and each season has its own rewards.
