Our Merry Band for our Spring Break trip to Scottsdale and Sedona has just expanded. My MIL and FIL are going to be joining us. My MIL has just finished a long, nasty, cold, winter of chemo and needs to celebrate in the sun and warmth. Prior to her treatment she was (and still is) a huge walker/hiker and swims every day, etc. However, one of the side effects of her treatment has been extreme leg pain and she worries about her abilities to complete any strenuous hikes. Leaving her at the resorts will NOT be an option...she will NOT allow it. So, my challenge is to find some hikes that we can do where we actually feel like we are hiking and seeing beautiful scenery while simultaneously not being overly strenuous. Any thoughts?

Try hiking in Papago Park. You will never be very far from where you started but you can get a good 'in the desert' feel.

For just a walk, you can go in the Indian Bend Greenbelt.

An in town walk would be to park at 56th st & Indian School and walk up toward Camelback Mountain

South Mountain Park in Phoenix has lots of trails of various levels.
Also, the Desert Botanical Gardens in Papago Park is lovely for walking.

When you arrive in Sedona, please go to the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center where you will be given free maps of all hikes in the Sedona area. The Center is on Hwy 89A at Forest Road in the uptown area, just after you come to where Hwy 89A joins Hwy 179.

Sedona's Bell Rock has some gentle hiking..good suggestion USNR on going to the Chamber for free maps..not the vortex maps.

We loved the Red Rock State Park in Sedona-it has some parts that are paved around the park and the other paths are pretty easy. Your MIL could also wait for you and sit on a bench if she gets tired. It is beautiful there.

You might also enjoy a Pink Jeep Tour(we took the Broken Arrow tour and it was great).

Thanks for the suggestions. I did as instructed and googled Sedona Hikes. Found this one great site that I have already forwarded to my mother-in-law. I think she really appreciated seeing photos of people her age doing the hikes. So that helps.

We have already booked Pink Jeep Broken Arrow for sunset for our little family. My in-laws are still trying to decide if they are up for all the bumps. I can't wait.

I am starting to get very excited for our trip.

Definitely recommend Red Rock State Park.
Also there are numerous "little hikes" that can be taken and the Visitor's Center at "the Y" near downtown will definitely provide perfect info. Be sure to stop there for maps and advice.
