hotel rate changes-Expedia

In mid-January I booked a hotel in Sydney for 3 nights with Expedia for $519. Today O fund that the same reservation would cost me $442 on Hotels.com so I asked Expedia if they would match the rate. Apparently they only will match a rate for the first 24 hours, what nonsense. I could cancel the reservation but that costs $17! Their only customer response was a form letter about the 24 hour policy. They I checked and found that even Expedia now had the reservation for $442! Now I'm trying to see if Expedia will just rebook me at their own rate. I'll probably have to wind up cancelling, paying Expedia and then making the same reservation elsewhere at $80 less. Great customer service.

Everything is clearly explained on the Expedia web site. When you book, you do have to acknowledge that you have read and agree to all the terms and conditions. Hardly "nonsense".

You might want to keep checking before booking another reservation with a cancellation penalty, as rates are going down all over as the months go by.

The best bet is to book something you can cancel, then keep shopping.

Well since expedia would match their own rate, I cancelled that booking, paid the $17 and rebooked with Hotels.Com whose price match goes up to the time that you actually stay, not just the 24 hours after you book. The explanations from Expedia make it clear that they have no real control over their bookings, they just use a third party and it's out of their hands. So their is no real advantage to using them if they can't even adjust prices to what they are advertising at the moment.

I still think that sucks, the 24 hour bit should be in big letters on their site otherwise you think that it's until you travel.

I made reservation with Expedia, and the rate went down a little (another country, flactuation of currency??) If the price goes down that it will be worth changing the reservation, how to deal with Expedia?
