maui resident card

I received an offer from a company to obtain a maui resident card to receive kamaaina discounts because I own property in Maui but live on the mainland. It costs $36. Does anyone know if Maui businesses accept such a card for kamaaina discounts in lieu of a Hawaii drivers license?
Also, can I get such a card through a government office without paying a $36 fee?

Never heard of a "Maui resident card" before, but I live on Oahu.

For kamaaina discounts typically businesses will take a DL or perhaps a state ID card.

Not sure what the requirements to obtain a state ID are, though - I've always just used my DL.

Try posting this on www.tripadvisor.com

Lots of Mauians there.

My guess this is a $36 scam.

I just found this site:

http://www.mauiresident.com/

This is for state I.D cards:

http://hawaii.gov/ag/hcjdc/main/hawaii_id_cards/

I don't think you would qualify for it.

The Maui Resident Card has been offered since 1992 and no one has ever used the word scam. We maintain the highest standards of integrity and anyone who has read the FAQs on our website will tell you that we are extremely thorough and law abiding. Whoever you are, perhaps you should visit our site, http://wwww.MauiResident.com and after you have read everything you will think twice about posting incorrectly.

Maui2009, your link doesn't work (too many w's). But, I did check out your website, and it doesn't give examples of places which will honor your card, although you offer a refund within 6 months.

My experience, on the Big Island where I have a home, is that places are strict about only taking a driver's license for kamaaina discounts, OR, they will give a discount very easily when they ask where I'm staying, and I say I live "part time" in my little town in Hawaii.

I have also heard that a photocopy of your property tax statement can work (and I would think just as well as a resident card) but I haven't seen any evidence of that.

With the economy being what it is in Hawaii, it seems easier to get discounts, and on the other hand, I hardly do any activities, and when I do, I feel it's fair to pay full price as I'm so appreciative and like to support the local economy.

I do not see how it is possible to be a "permanent" resident of Hawaii (as the card claims) if you are a permanent resident of a different state. It is either one or the other.

To me it is not a valid form of an I.D. if one claims to be a permanent Hawaii resident if they are in fact a permanent resident of a different state.

So I also think it is a scam.

If I had a Maui business, I would not honor such a card.
