Restaurant near Intercontinental Hotel Singapore?
Now that I know where we will be staying...I have so many recs from you all, but quickly can someone tell me a decent restaurant ( under $60/person please), for dinner near our hotel? Or are the hotel restaurants at Intercontinental recommendable?
or should we go down to the Quay area. this will be our first night, arriving at 4.30 pm after traveling quite a bit.
Where would you suggest? thanks.
Does a map exits with most recommended restaurants already on it?

you guys are great. and of the 22 restaurants listed.. any favorites?
sounds like the quay is better for a drink another time?
i have to get out my "Fodors' list" and start tryng to figure out neighborhoods.

You know, in the event you want "local," or at least something you can't get anywhere else, head for some chili crab. Its an outstanding and uniquely Sporean dish. We had one at Jumbo, at Clarke Quay, and it was excellent. The area is very nice, well worth a stroll at night, packed and lively. Chimes too looked very nice, but we only saw it during the day. Have fun.

Definitely have chili crab or black pepper crab while you are in Singapore. Gpanda recommended a place - see if you can find his post.
I was responding to your need for a place to eat your first night after long travels. For me, I'm not up for something spicy my first night somewhere. And I'm not interested in wandering for an hour to find a place to eat my first night.
Chjimes has some good restaurants and they are all under one roof. Last place we ate there was Italian and was quite good.
We've had good food at Clarke Quay - Indian food. We went and looked at the menus (and what people were eating and chose one. So I recommend Clarke Quay, but perhaps not for your first night.

i am sure i have gpanda's recs.. will transcribe everything between now and then.
thanks for the nearby suggestion as i doubt we will feel like touring too much that night. but who knows!
i still have bits to finalize. airasia doesn't seem to like my visa card. very frustrating.

The Olive Tree Restaurant in the Intercon is actually good (it’s their casual coffee shop) and may be just fine if you don’t want to venture out too far. There are also many casual restaurants and a food court in Bugis Junction, the ersatz “colonial street” attached to your hotel, easy to get to as well and fine if you just want a quick meal. I could not really recco any place but see http://www.bugisjunction-mall.com.sg/
You can easily walk to Raffles Hotel in less than 10 minutes and eat in one of their restaurants. You could definitely have a meal at the Empire Café for less than US$60 and I think outdoors at the Courtyard as well, and possibly the buffet at the Tiffin Room but that one may be a little bit more dressy than you may feel like. The Seah Street Deli, while quite casual, may be all that you want or need after a long airplane ride.
Finally, don’t rule out just getting in a taxi and going for 10-15 minutes to someplace like Holland Village where there are about half a dozen Continental and some Asian restaurants, many with outdoor seating, along Jalan Merah and Lorong Mambong that just may be what you want and would all be in that price range, try Kinara 24 Lorong Mambong Tel: 6467 4101) Bistro Petit Salut (http://www.aupetitsalut.com/index.html) or Da Paolo http://www.dapaolo.com.sg/bistro_rest.htm. Or the Dempsey Road or Rochester Park areas which also has several good restaurants with outdoor seating, including another branch of Petit Salut and Da Paolo. This may just be easier than walking someplace. Your son may have a view. Dempsey would be the closest in to you, but none are really that far away.
You can also walk to Arab Street in a few minutes from your hotel, one good casual place there is

Little India is quite close, but at night and not knowing where you are going, can seem confusing walking there as you have to cross some major streets; if your son is with you then consider Banana Leaf Apollo at 78 Race Course Road (Tel: 6293-8682) or just take a taxi.
The Intercon is at the Bugis MTR stop so you really can go anywhere on the MTR that you have the time and patience for.
I also just saw your post on Christmas dinner. I am surprised that you are not finding dinners at all the hotels, as that is usually the case. They may be a little pricey, but would have turkey, stuffing, etc which IMO you may be hard pressed to find in other places. Also make sure that you ask about lunch versus set dinner, as lunch may be quite a bit less. Have you tried the Marriott, the Ritz-Carlton, the Shangri-La (all three), the Goodwood Park, the Fullerton, the Four Seasons, the Regent Four Seasons, the St Regis, the Conrad, the Mandarin, the Hyatt, the Sheraton and the Hilton? Also try 4-star rather than luxury hotels like the Furama, the Merchant Court, the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, the two Meritus Mandarins (see http://www.meritus-hotels.com not operated by Mandarin hotels), Traders (i.e., Shangri-La) or the Orchard Parade hotel. Try either of the YMCAs on Orchard Road or Stevens Road (see http://www.ymca.org.sg/ and http://www.mymca.org.sg/) Otherwise, you might try English pubs like the Yard (River Valley Road, I don’t know for sure if they are serving, but worth a try), or I don’t know if places like the Hard Rock Café will be serving a Christmas menu but may be worth checking.
Also, try calling any of the Western restaurants on your list for Singapore and asking if they are open on Christmas and if they are serving a traditional menu. For example, I see that Flutes at the Fort is open on Christmas Day and has a set meal at S$88 for lunch and S$188 for dinner. Finally, if your son lives in Singapore, if any of his friends or colleagues belong to any club like the Cricket Club, Tanglin Club, American Club, etc they all have meals and perhaps you can gently suggest an invitation…..One private club which does have a semi-public dining room is the Polo Club, you might try that at http://www.singaporepoloclub.org/default.htm

thank you cicerone.. what an extensive post. i really appreciate it.
our son just arrived yesterday for work, and all his colleagues , too, so they will not be much help. (this is a team brought in to tend to an event). of course i trust fodorites opinions.. and you are all at the touch of a keyboard!
he is also asking the concierge at his hotel for ideas.
i am sure once we land and get settled in hotel we will whip out my "list" and make some decisons.
I only checked out some of the hotels' restaurants recomended here and so many were really very expensive, although i am sure fabulous, and besides not wanting to spend a night's lodging on dinner, i am not sure how hungry we will be .. especially for western fare.
final organizing today. was finally able to use my mastercard at airasia to book ourlast internal flight. i certainly hope we have no credit card problems once there. this has been so frustrating.

OK, if your son and a big crowd are there, let me make sort of a crazy suggestion. Many hotels in Singapore offer complete cooked Christmas dinners, all nicely boxed, hot and ready to take away. (I know this because I have “cooked” Christmas dinner that way when living in Singapore, and am going to a Christmas Day dinner here in Hong Kong for 10 people that is being cooked courtesy of the JW Marriott Hong Kong. We plan on hiking for the better part of the day and no one wants to cook.). I can see that the Marriott Singapore is offering this as well, and you can order a turkey based on size, plus all the trimmings, see http://christmas.singaporemarriott.com/parties.html
and then click on “Christmas dining”, then “Christmas order form”. The Intercon may be too, check their website or call them.
I have to say that these meals are better than many people can cook themselves. Per person these usually work out to something like US$30-40. They don’t include beverages or wine or other spirits, which you could buy yourself (including some at duty free when you arrive.) You could order one of these (and I mean pronto, call the hotel now) and then set up a meal at a venue of your choice. As generally the weather is so good in Singapore (rain notwithstanding), you could pick an outdoor venue like the beach along East Coast parkway at a picnic spot (there are picnic tables at many areas, or perhaps the hotel would give you indoor or outdoor space. Or perhaps whoever is sponsoring your son’s event could set up some sort of venue. You would need table cloths or blankets or big towels and glassware and cutlery (your hotel may be able to provide, or you could buy paper at a grocery store), but this could be a fun and festive way to get a Christmas dinner.
You could just order a small dinner for the 3 of you as well, but a large party might be fun.

thansk for all the encouragement. his work partners will all be on vacation.. he is waiting for us to arrive.
i have written the american club as i was president here in valencia for 10 years..( thank you for that suggestion).. it hadn't even ocurred to me although i suggest others do the same when travlling near holidays!
if that sounds good to him maybe he will venture over there if there is still room.
or perhaps he will have met a lost soul between today and tuesday to celebrate with!!

also next day indochine at asian museum.
these two were quite nice.
had disappointing meal at jumbo longboat quay.. clark quay jumbo was booked.
