Seeking driver/guide
My friend and I will be visiting Jordan at the end of December -- am seeking a driver/guide whom I can contact/book in advance via e-mail for travel to Petra, Wadi Rum, etc. Have searched the forum but haven't found e-mails for drivers/guides -- also have noticed that many suggest renting a car; however, that is not an option for us (two women).

We were two women and could have easily rented a car. The roads are good and well marked.
That aside, we had pre-arranged our tours through our hotel; had a pleasant driver (a/c Mercedes Benz) first day to/from Petra where we picked-up a guide for touring the site.
Next day we had a driver/guide (a/c MB) for sightseeing around Amman; also to Jerash where we picked-up a site guide to tour the area.
This was some years back, and don't recall the price, but it was very reasonable (read: inexpensive).
Contact your hotel and see what they can offer. Or, search this board for Jordanian tour operators... there are a few written about; contact them for your sightseeing needs.

I have been successful in tracking down a couple of driver/guide persons who are quoting $175 US (or more) per day for a car and English-speaking driver. This seems quite high to me. Comments???

My husband, in our world-wide travels, always drove. We also ALWAYS travelled independently. I do not drive (know that sounds a bit weird) and my friend does not really want to drive. I prefer independent travel (rather than a tour), thus the search for a driver continues.

$175/day for driver/vehicle.
That's not a lot - for the amount of time, vehicle, petrol, driver's pay.
You'll then probably be responsible for the entry fee (inexpensive) and small tip for site guide at Petra. And, I guess lunch somewhere (inexpensive).
You're two people, using services of and spending a full day from about 8am to 8-9pm or later.
Over the years, regardless where I've visited, most full-day tours (9pm-5pm) can run $75-$150/person.
