Cinque Terre

We're taking our first trip to Europe next May and will be staying two nights in Monterosso at the La Spiaggia Hotel. Do any of you know anything about this hotel? Also, I would like to know the best way by train to get from Rome to Monterosso. Thank you for any help you can give me! We're so excited about our trip!!

I cannot help you about La Spiaggia because I know where it is but I never slept there. In Monterosso, the last week of May 2006, I chose an hotel that I suggest: LOCANDA IL MAESTRALE (www.locandamaestrale.net) in the center of the small town.
A suggestion for dinner could be, in a very small hamlet named Beo, IL CILIEGIO.
About train I think that the best solution is the following:
Roma Termini departure time at 13:46 by IC Carignano; arrival at La Spezia at 17:52. Then you commute and the train has departure time at 18:01. Its first stop is Riomaggiore (already Cinque Terre) and the second stop is your stop, Monterosso, at 18:17.
Have a lovely trip.

Ciao.

Vincenzo

Thanks for the tips, Vincenzo. The trains seem quite confusing, and it seems difficult to find online how to get from Rome to the Monterosso. We'd also like to stop briefly in Pisa and possibly Sienna.

I'm sorry my reply got screwed up somehow. I meant to say that I too know La Spiaggia and know that it gets mixed reviews, but I haven't stayed there. Enjoy yhe 5T.

Hi janeth13,
I just booked a room for 2 nights in June at La Spiaggia. Yes, the reviews are mixed and not necessarily flattering to the owner, Mr. Poggi. What I found most curious when speaking to him is that while he took my credit card # to hold the reservation, he said that when we check out, he will take a personal check from us. I questioned that he would take a check in dollars and he said it was no trouble. He deposits the check and lets the bank do the conversion for him. What a character! Having lived in Italy, I think I have a sense of what he's like. I will be really curious to hear a report from you about your stay there.

Janeth,

From Roma Termini, you will take the train to Florence, then Pisa. We stopped there for a 3 hour "layover" to see the sights. Then in Pisa, you change to the more local train that will take you to Monterosso.

Visit www.trenitalia.com, but the local trains to the CT are not shown there. Someone else probably know the site for those schedules.

I don't think you would have time for an additional stop in Siena.

Buon viaggio

I am going to Cinque Terre in September and have booked La Spiaggia. Did you end up staying there in May? If so, how was your stay? I am concerned about the mixed reviews on trip advisor. So,we have considered staying in one of two B&Bs in the Old Part of town - Hotel La Poesia or Il Giardino Incantato. Although the B&Bs are not on the water they still seem to be quite close in walking distance to the beach. Thanks in advance for any advice. Kristen

I took the local train from La Spezia. Any train that gets you to La Spezia will connect you to Monterosso.

Just in case you're looking for an alternative to La Spiaggia: We stayed at the 5Terre Hotel in Monterosso and liked it. Clean, good location in New Town, friendly, helpful staff, good breakfast. Very few Americans stay there -- seemed like mostly Germans.

thanks for the reply. 5 Terre is booked, as are many of the other hotels. This a last minute trip we are trying to pull together, frustrating as I usually plan far in advance to secure best place/price. Appreciate it!

You will love this area! Stay excited. There is so much to do and see.

We stayed in Levanto at Hotel Garden this past May and used water taxi to travel the CT. We loved the whole itinerary and hotel.

With regard to train, it's very easy. We will post on site this weekend video directions for using the electronic machines so you do not waste time in a line at Rome Termini.

The trenitalia.com website is in English and is very very helpful.

FYI - your train ticket may not reflect where you are going and where the station change occurs. I make it a habit of always confirming the stations and times with the trenitalia guys in green jackets on train. Typically the people in the stations sellig the tix do not have proper information.

I stayed three nights (April 2008) in Monterrosso at A Ca du Gigante bed & breakfast. Only 7 rooms and several of the rooms are located directly at street level and about two feet from the street - very noisy and it sounded like the traffic as well as people walking on the sidewalk were just inches from my bed. The B&B is very well maintained and staff friendly and knowledgeable but I would not stay there again because of the proximity to the street. Best dinner in Italy was at Ciak.
