3 black rhinos poached in Zim

I've just received this from Zim and have been asked to publish these bad news to an wider audience.

If all the Beasts were gone man would die

REWARD FUNDING

Reward funding required towards the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the brutal killing of our 3 Black Rhino at Imire Game Park on the night of 7th November 2007.

DJ mother of 7-week old Tatenda (now orphaned) Sprinter (father of Tatenda) and Amber (pregnant mother and ready to give birth).

They were shot while in there bomas.

In 20 seconds our Black Rhino breeding stock were annihilated.

Obviously the bigger the reward the better the prospects of these culprits being brought to JUSTICE. All funds will be carefully monitored and invested until such time the reward is paid or refunded to those who have contributed.

All funds made payable to

Incase you didn’t receive the facts, I have put them below as there are so many rumors flying around.

-There were 4 armed poachers dressed in camo

-Poachers parked their car on the next door farm and walked to Rileys House. (John and Judes son)

-Riley was out on an anti poaching patrol at the time luckily

-They tied up and beat up the maid

-They beat up 2 other workers made them take the poachers to the Rhino pens

-Woke up all the rhino guards, took away their weapons, roughed them up and tied them up

-They fired 10 rounds killing 3 adult rhino, (4 babies are fine)

- Didn’t see the 4 week old baby rhino in the corner

-Two other babies were in another pen on another site

- The rhino had been dehorned 6 weeks ago so only had an inch of new horn

-The poachers managed to hack away at one of the horns but were then scared off by the sound of a car

- Word had got back to Riley about the shooting so he was on his way

-The poachers car came from the Harare direction and sped off in the Wedza direction

-The police were called at 9.30pm on Wednesday night, only turned up at 7am Thursday morning

I've got some feedback from Zim:

"I heard from John Travers this morning. He and Judy are the people who run the breeding programme at Imire. It would seem that because of international awareness of the situation that there is to be greater co-operation for them locally.

The calf is alive and responding well to eight daily feeds and there have been donations of enough milk powder and glucose to see him through to weaning age. He is not out of danger as yet, as he is so young. So time will tell.

There have been undertakings that greater security will be provided to all at the facility for the safety of their rhinos and themselves.

Thank you. This is because of you and others like you."

I got an email from an agent friend of mine about a new way to see and help Zimbabwe. "It is an adventure holiday with a difference that combines regular tourism activities in Matobo Hills/Hwange and Vic Falls with hands-on work with research and conservation. They are planning on a normal trip duration of about 4 weeks but it is totally flexible. The whole idea is to genuinely put something back into the communities, with guests seeing Zimbabwe both from a tourist perspective then also from a local perspective, as part of your time is spent living in a genuine village in the Matopos."

The not-for-profit organization's website is still under construction, but you can check out the basics at:

I have not posted on Fodors for a long time, however I wished to provide an update to this news as sent to me by Johnny Rodrigues of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force. He has sent me a number of images which are shocking and sad and thus please be advised of the sensitivity of these images before viewing.
