You can hire guides at the visitor center but we did not use them. We took our guidebooks and explored Petra for two days on our own.
As for hotels, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza right next to Petra. It's connected via a path. We liked that convenience, plus it had a pool so we could relax during the hot afternoons. We enjoyed our stay there. Depending on your budget, there's the ritzy Moevenpick, which is across the street, and some smaller hotels and hostels within a 15-minute walk.

It's my understanding that the Crowne Plaza and the Movenpick are both close to the entrance. Question - how much further away from the entrance is the Crowne Plaza? I'm going to Jordan in February and need to confirm hotel at Petra soon. Is the difference in location betwen the two hotels, just that-across the street?
Thanks

Glo9,
Yes, both Crowne and Moevenpick are close to the entrance of Petra. I'd say it was about a 5 minute walk from CP via the footpath. CP is basically next to Petra. The Moevenpick entrance gate is about 5+ minute walk right across the street from the ticket window/visitor's centre.
We chose CP because we're members of their loyalty program.

The Movenpick is literally right in front on the entrance to Petra... certainly less than a 5 minute walk, more like 1 minute. You can't get any closer.
The Crowne Plaza is also close, but just a little further away.
If the price is similar, I would definitely stay at the Movenpick again. It is clean, modern, and the common areas are beautiful. The breakfast is great too.
Note there is another Movenpick, the Nabatean Castle, which has stunning architecture but is much further away. There is a free shuttle though. My understanding is that it is only open in the high season and serves as an overflow hotel when the original Movenpick fills up.
