Safari wear -suggestions needed Nov. trip
We're off November 7th for three week trip most of which will be in Botswanna, Namibia, and Zimbawe staying at camps "on safari". With a weight limit of 26 pounds need to be careful. What suggestions do you have for clothes (female) and shoes. Thanks for your help.

They do laundry (except for underwear) at all the camps, so you don't need much. I usually take 2 to 3 pairs of the "zip-off" pants that can also serve as shorts if it gets warm. I also take 4 or 5 long-sleeved shirts whose sleeves can be rolled up and tabbed, again for warmer weather. If it's going to be warm when you go (and I think it will) then perhaps only a couple of long sleeved shirts and the rest, short-sleeved. It will be cool in the evenings, though, so take a jacket. Add something to sleep in, underwear, wide-brimmed hat that can be tied on (open vehicles), a pair of shoes, and sandals. I just use tennis shoes (beige to keep from showing a lot of dirt) and Teva sandals, in case I'm in a situation where it's wet. Finally, you'll need to take your toiletries and perhaps a few over-the-counter meds for an upset tummy, congestion, etc.
You'll need to pack in a soft-sided bag that can go into the small openings of the Cessnas you'll probably be flying. I like the Rick Steves bag, as I can carry it as a back-pack and its starting weight is only about 3 pounds.
As Matt says, there are several threads about packing lists on the Forum, but the search feature isn't working at its best right now. If you can't find them here, google "packing list fodor's" and see what comes up.

If you don't have a hanging scale, you can always weigh yourself on your home scale, step off, then weigh yourself holding your bag. Calculate the weight difference. I did that before getting the hanging scale. Magellan's and other travel catalogs and stores also have hanging scales for use with luggage.

The size and weight restrictions are far more generous if not on a flying safari (doing a land safari). According to American Air and Brittish Air you can pack a checked 30 inch duffle with up to 51 pounds and a 22 inch duffle up to 40 pounds for each person. Check their web sites for specific items allowed and disallowed. Then check with your tour operator for any restrictions on the vehicle. We are leaving in five days for Kenya and our operator has only the two of us (and the driver/guide) in s seven person four wheeled pop up top minivan.

If it mosquito time then I found 'Buzz Off' clothing to be fabulous (Ex Officio) and many of our American fellow guests wore it. I had socks, hat, T shirt and a light sweat shirt all bought on sale so not too glam!!
We had very few mozzies but they seek me out and my husband got one bite and I didn't get any!!!

An alternative to the "Buzz Off" clothing is to treat your clothing with permethrin spray, following directions. "Buzz Off" clothing is basically clothing treated with permethrin in such a way that it lasts through about 25 washings.
