Yellow Fever vaccination needed for Manaus or other places in Brazil?
We're going to Brazil at the end of May into June. Our travel is with a tour that stays mostly on the coast except for a 7 day cruise on the Amazon and Rio Negro from Manaus; taking walks as we go.I want to be prepared health wise, but don't want to do more than necessary.
What's your advice?

Being relatively cautious, I'd say go with the CDC recommendations, which include yellow fever vaccine. It isn't the safest vaccine on the market, but it's about 99% effective. It also lasts 10 years. We got ours when we went to Panama a couple years ago.
Also would get typhoid, Hepatitis A & B, make sure your tetanus is up to date.
We took malaria meds in Panama too, as well as during a trip to southern Belize.
We're in Belize now, but on one of the northern cayes, we don't bother with malaria meds here, but they are recommended.
Talk to your local travel clinic. Not every physician's office can give yellow fever vaccine. There's a special stamp required for the vaccine record and not every doc has one.

some cases of yellow fever have been detected and here, in spain, as brazil is such a popular resort destination for spaniards, there has been a lot of publicity about travel agents needing to insist/suggest srtongly their clients get this vaccine.

hi, as you are going up the amazon and yellow fever is spread by mosquitos I would def recommend the yellow fever vaccine. It has to be taken at least 10 days before departure and you have to take it when feeling well, ie no flu or fever etc. There have been a couple of cases here in Brasil recently and so yes, , it's better.

I'm in Colombia at the moment, and rumor has it there have been cases of yellow fever in one of the national parks on the Caribbean coasat. Supposedly, they aren't allowing people into the park without proof of vaccination.
I don't know if Brazil would ever do the same, but it would sure be a shame not to be able to head up the Amazon because you didn't get the shot. It's good for 10 years....

I did a very similar cruise so I asked my doctor if I needed a yellow fever shot. She said yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes and if you catch yellow fever the mortality rate is 50%. I didn't like those odds so I got the shot.
You might think you can avoid yellow fever by using mosquito repellant. WRONG. Despite your best efforts you will get bit at least once. All it takes is one bite from an infected mosquito and you've got a potentially deadly disease. Get the shot, PERIOD.
And take anti-malaria pills too.
