My husband & I will be in Jamaica for 6 nights in mid-March. 1st 3 nights will be spent either in Negril or Treasure Beach & the last 3 in Ocho Rios. He'd like to go fishing for at least a few hours 1 morning, preferably when we're in the Negril or Treasure part of the trip. Any recommendations/expectations? Guides? Cost? Thanks!

We just returned from two weeks in Jamaica and are avid fishermen. We used Marlin Madness in Montego Bay, the boat is at Doctors Cave Beach. Peter is the captain, 438-2629 and Reds (also a captain I might add) is his first mate, 387-1906. These guys know their stuff and, while it's the tail end of the marlin season, we managed to catch a 150 lb blue marlin the day we went out with them. There were five of us fishing, total cost was $480 for a half day. Hope this helps.

Thanks! Any other ideas from folks in the Negril, Ocho or Treasure Beach Regions? At this point we're leaning towards 3 nights in either Negril Cliffs or Treasure Beach before we head to Ocho for a friends wedding. We prefer to do the fishing before we get to Ocho.

Lots of commercial/subsistence fishers in TB and boatmen/deep-sea or simple
trawl the coast trips. Crossbar, bonito,
snappers of every color, wahoo and if you real luck marlin (tho they're around largely in October) are the prize. Dennis Abrahams, Paolo, John from Great Bay, Aman Parchment and
Len Parchment from Billy's Bay -- there
are lots of good choices. Taking the 12 mile boat trip up the coast thru dolphin waters to Pelican Bar and then on and into Black River is the 'must-do' here.Axel at Mar Blue will also cook
most anything you catch.

Tiverton - Thanks again for all the great advice. I hope you don't mind the numerous questions! For the guys out of Billy's Bay, how do you recommend booking something & finding them? Is there a spot to look online? Or would we be best off going through the folks at MarBlue if we stay there?

The 12mi boat trip you mentioned sounds right up our alley. How long do you think that would take if we added in sight-seeing, fishing, & stopping at the Pelican? Is it 12 miles from MarBlue to the Pelican? Or just to get all the way up to the River? We were very interested in the River area, fishing & a stop at the Pelican so this sounds PERFECT! Would we be able to explore the Black River area if we did it this combined way? Would one of the guys you mentioned be able to take us on this type of trip, or would you recommend someone else?. This option really sounds great because it could be a nice, long day & then that'd leave us some time on another day to do some things right around MarBlue.

Axel and Andrea can set you up with the right boatman for Pelican Bar, about 12 miles up the coast from TB en route to
Black River. With Black River -- go upstream to see crocs, jacana, shrimp fishers and Sister Lou's for boiled blue crab with lime/simple,fresh.
It's a half-day trip, as would be
YS Falls/Bamboo Avenue, 40 min.away by
van/guide. Milk River Bath/Guts River is the only full-day trip, which you
can save for next time back...

It was during our stay at Mar Blue that we met Dennis Abrahams, Axel and Andrea invited him for dinner and we hired him for the next day, then again a year later. he's great

I'm headed to Jamaica next week and hope to do some fishing in the Treasure Beach
Black river area. what gear is needed for inshore salt water fishing and is there good fishing in any of the local rivers?

Some tarpon fishing at mouth of Black River/offshore. Talk to Charlie Swaby
or Shirley at Black River Safari Queen, the metal Butler bldg. just over bridge in Black River. He does deepsea big league, fullly-gared, as well. Great guy and a noted turalist/preservationist
of the entire wetlands area, a pioneer.
In TB, many a fisherman can take you ouot, geared up. Talk to AMAN PARCHMENT in Billy's Bay, another great guy, who runs fishing boats out to Pedro Keys.

We went deep sea fishing and river fishing while in Negril. There's a river that runs just behind the main road in town, and we caught a lot of snook. Had a great time. Many of the hotels can make recommendations on who can take you out. We have long time friends who do it, but not sure their vessels are sea-worthy anymore! Good luck
