Chinese Restaurants in Pasadena

Will be in Pasadena in early may for a GTG with Asian forum folks. I would like some advice on some good Chinese restaurants in the area. We will be staying at the Marriott Courtyard 180 North Fair Oaks Avenus. Does not have to 5 star fancy but should be good, clean and pleasant ambiance.

I like Yujean Kang on Raymond.

Granted, all Chinese in Pasadena pales next to the long-gone Two Panda Robot Restaurant on N. Lake. Does anyone else go back that far and remember this place? My daughter was young and loved being served by the robot. lol

Definitely Yujean Kang's. Fabulous food and an easy walk from your hotel. The atmosphere is pleasant too, not ultra fancy but nice. I eat there about once a month and have never had a meal that wasn't terrific. Prices at lunch are a bargain too.

Also, if you would consider Thai food, my friends swear by Saladang on Fair Oaks about five blocks south of your hotel. I'm not a big fan of Thai food so have not been there myself, but hear lots about it.

Miranda- thanks for the info- now I want know that the food there is not "Fusion", or Shee Shee if you folow my drift here. We enjoy great Chinese food here in Houston- not artistically displayed works of art that you sometimes get in the fancy places.

Yujean Kang is great. Saladang is wonderful for Thai. If you're a bit more adventurous, get Asian recommendations for the SGV and the eastern suburbs of LA on www.chowhound.com.

Now you're talkin' about food on my turf. The best Chinese IMO is Oak Tree Inn in South Pasadena; its on Fair Oaks about 2-3 miles south of where you are staying. The food is delicious, seafood outstanding. This is where Asian families go for special dinners. You'll see the crustaceans swimming in the tank behind the hostess station. This gives an indication of the freshness of ingredients. The decor is pleasant; service friendly and accommodating. Entrees $7-13; large portions (3 can share one dish). I've been going there for 12 years and never a bad meal.
I sometimes end up disappointed at Y Kang's. Its a bit too precious (and pricy) and some of their innovative food pairings just don't work for me.
A third Chinese in Pasadena (about 2 miles east of where you're staying near Old Town) is Yang Chow. Bustling, noisy, more families with small children, down home. Very tasty food (I love their slippery shrimp) but not as classy or high end food as Oak Tree Inn.
