Aqaba to Cairo

As part of an Egypt tour this coming March, we want to add a visit to Petra which will terminate in Aquaba.

Apparently there are 3 options for getting from Aquaba to Cairo:

1) transfer by car to Amman (4 hours) then fly to Cairo.

2) ferry from Aqaba to Nuweiba (said to take 1 hour but I've read it can take MUCH longer) then car to Cairo (7 hours)

3) Nuweiba to Sharm El Sheik (about 1 hour?) and then fly direct to Cairo.

Option 3 sounds like the way to go. Anyone have any comments?

Cheers,

Losher

Last November we toured independently starting in Jordan and then on to Egypt, starting at Sharm. The flight from Aqaba to Sharm on Jordan Air (Wings) did indeed look like the best way. If you've done your homework, you know that it is only scheduled 4 times a week. We booked it on Expedia--8:00AM. We planned to go to Aqaba from Petra the day before the flight & booked a hotel in Aqaba.

Two weeks before we departed, Expedia gave us a time change--8:00PM. When we checked into our hotel in Amman, 9 days before the flight & asked to have it reconfirmed, we were told the flight had been cancelled. The concierge managed to get us on a 1:00 flight from Amman, otherwise we would have been stuck in Jordan, for who knows how long. We were picked up in Petra at 8:00 and reached the airport at 10:30. The plane was a small prop with about 20 people.

After this experience, if I were you, I would not chance the flight from Aqaba, I would go to Amman & take the flight directly to Cairo.

Oops!!! I misread your third option as Aqaba to Sharm--At any rate, we ruled out the ferry because we had read to many harrowing tales--boat cancelled because of rough sea, boat delayed for hours, etc. etc. I have actually given you a 4th option which you may not have been aware of, but would advise against it. I still think, the easiest, most comfortable, surest, least hassle free way to go would be drive to Amman & fly directly to Cairo.

Losher,

Please post a trip report, however brief. I am looking at doing the same trip but in the reverse order in a year or so.

T E Lawrence made the trip to Suez from Aquaba in fifty hours on camel back. Now there's an adventure for you!
