I will be in Adelaide for work in November. I want to see as much as I can in a very short amount of time. What is a most to do in Adelaide and nearby cities. Also how far is Adelaide to Melbourne??

Adelaide to Melbourne is about one hour by air or a day's travel by car by the most direct route. If time allows, take the Great Ocean Road drive but allow three days if you can which would also allow you to visit the Grampians NP.
Close to Adelaide, you could visit the wine growing areas of Barossa Valley, Clare or McLaren Vale. Take the ferry to Kangeroo Island. Hire a car and drive to Broken Hill for an outback experience. Fly to Port Lincoln and see some of the Eyre Pensinsula.

There are no nearby cities as such, but there are a lot of nice little towns in the surrounding wine areas (Barossa and Clare Valleys and McLaren Vale) and the Adelaide Hills, all within a 2-hour drive of Adelaide. If you don't fancy driving, you can take a tour of the Barossa Valley. Adelaide itself is a pleasant city with many good eating options, concentrated around the eastern end of Rundle Street, also in North Adelaide across the river. The "cultural precinct" is on and close to North Terrace. You may be able to catch a show at the Festival Centre.

Adelaide to Melbourne is about 725 km by the most direct route, but that's a pretty boring drive. The Great Ocean Road is well worth doing if you have 2-3 days - otherwise fly, and maximise your time in each city.

Wouldn't recommend hiring a car and driving to Broken Hill unless you have loads of time (don't quite understand where previous tipper got their info from) - alao wouldn't recommend trying to drive to MLB in one day.

WOULD recommend you get a map, and get a little bit informed. You needn't pay - free on the internet.

Kangaroo Island would be good if you are interested in wildlife and like to walk. Otherwise just enjoy the city of Adelaide and maybe take a day trip to the wine country or the Adelaide Hills - loads to choose from and it's a good day out.
