I am seeking family friendly places to stay on Saba (2 adults, 2 small children) for this Winter. A cottage or similar are probably best (w/Kitchen). I've looked at the Eco-Lodge, El Momo, Scouts, Julianas & the Cottage Club so far. My primary concern is being w/in walking distance to town & ease of getting to the Hotel or cottage w/2 kids (won't have much luggage). Experiences (good or bad) encouraged, tell me everything. My geography is failing me here. Cost does not appear to be a big issue. Thx, S.

Some of the places you have mentioned will have a bit of a hike to get to them and I know you have little ones, so that might factor into your decision.

Of those you have mentioned, the ones that won't have a hike or a lot of steep stairs, and have easier access to town, are are Scouts Place, Juliana's, and The Cottage Club.

I have a friend who stayed at El Momo recently and loved it, but did say that the stairs to and from nearly killed her each day. Eco-Lodge seems to be a bit of a hike to get to, as well, and also a bit outside of town, IMO.

Both of those places are quite eco-friendly, which is great, but they also might not be cohesive to the comforts of all young children with having no hot water, no A/C when it's a bug night, limited lighting, etc.

Ooooh, SA. I have no info to help you at all, but I just wanted to say how glad I am that you're going to Saba so that I can read your trip report upon return. First Montserrat and now this--hearing about them secondhand is such a treat for those of us who have not yet taken those particular unbeaten paths!

I do tend to like the 'unbeaten paths'. We will also be returning to Montserrat on this trip as well. Thx Statia, one of the guys I work with day-tripped to Saba & just loved it. However, he did warn me about hiking up the Mt. (literally). The 4 year old will be fine, the little guy will probably need to hitch a ride. I would like to be close to town though (but not right in it). I'll re-look at the Cottage Club as well. Thx, S.

ej - just an aside, but Yelapa is next on our list, but I am still in the gathering stage there + I tend to favor the Atlantic/Caribbean over the Pacific.

SA, Yelapa looks wonderful, based on what I've seen of it from Faithie's trip report several months ago. A bargain, even in winter, a beautiful beach, and off the beaten path--great combo!

Not sure how easy it is to get to Puerto Vallarta though, especially from CLT. Faithie was an inspiration though...

Out of this world, but down to earth

Our three days on Saba were delightful. It is unlike any other island that we have ever visited. (And we’ve been to just about all.) Everything about it was exhilarating…the roads, the sense of community, and the amazing vistas. And a couple of meals (and wine!) at the Gatehouse made it feel even more special after a day of touring and snooping. Lyliane and Michel Job are as special as the island. Five-Star kudos to you both! Friendly, warm, welcoming, and accommodating. This is a definite stop on a return visit to St. Martin…or better yet, a week’s stay at the Gatehouse Hotel/Villa.

Well, since you have to go...if you happen to stumble across any private cottages or villas I would welcome info on them. That just seems to be the best/easiest for my small family. + I love to cook, so I am open to suggestions in the area of food as well. Enjoy your stay, & have a safe trip !

I'll ask around, SA. I know of a couple of private villas that rent, but the specific names are escaping me at the moment. I have several friends there who I'm srue I can get some info. from.

With regards to shopping to cook, we always go to Big Rock Market in Windwardside. As far as I know that is really the only grocery store (not mini-mart, but grocery store) on the island.

That's another reason we like staying at Cottage Club. They own Big Rock Market, too, and will deliver all your groceries to your cottage for cooking at no charge, not to mention the two are fairly close to one another.

Driving on Saba is usually not recommended since it is so very different than most places. Steep, narrow, hairpin, curves for the most part. We've never rented a car there and don't know anyone else who has, although I'm sure they are available.

There are plenty of taxis (at least for the small nature of the island) and they aren't expensive to use to get from village to village when you want to. That is one reason we stay in Windwardside, though. It has the most to do within walking distance so we never have the need for a car or cab unless we want to just take a drive/tour, go to the harbor, or go to The Bottom for a bit. Also, most restaurants will spring for a taxi to transport you for dinner, at no charge.

I can recommend a dear friend of ours who we are meeting up with this weekend, as far as taxi drivers go. He gives great tours of the island and is very personable.
