Curacao in late August?
Hello,
My husband and I are considering spending our 4 year anniversary in Curacao. The reviews I have read from you all about the Hotel Kura Hulanda sound FANTASTIC. I checked out their website and it is very difficult to get a grasp on which room we should book.. Also can anyone tell me about the beach? Is it rocky? Would you suggest travelling in late August which is when we are considering going? Thanks so much for any help you can give!

There are two Kura Hulanda properties -- the Hotel is in town in a restored historic complex, very interesting, charming and romantic. However, there is not a beach as it is right in the city. The second property is the Lodge, which is located way out on the west end of Curacao (about 40 minutes from town, I believe). If you must have a beach, go with the Lodge but realize you will be isolated. An ideal trip might be a few days at the Hotel and several days at the Lodge -- we'd like to do that sometime. We stayed at the Marriott which we liked very much. Curacao is a decent choice for August as it is out of the hurricane belt (but hurricanes can still occur, which happened to Aruba a few years ago.)

Thanks so much for your help! A beach is definitely crucial for us, so maybe dividing our time between the 2 establishments is good advice. Would you recommend any other islands for late August?

End of August is getting into prime hurricane season and considering the high activity of the last few years, I think Curacao might be one of the best choices for you in that time frame. Aruba is also an option, but we liked Curacao better than Aruba -- more personality, more of a caribbean/ european feel to it, Aruba seems like Miami Beach to me, very Americanized and very built up. I have been to many islands and I really enjoyed Curacao. The beaches/rocks/cliffs were really picturesque and the snorkeling was good. We liked the dining options and the city has a lot of charm, looks like little Amsterdam. It was easy to drive around (they drive on the right, like the US) you absolutely should get a car so you can travel around to beaches and restaurants. It's not a lush, beautiful island and there are not really long beaches where you can walk for miles, all the beaches are "cove" beaches. There is also some nightlife and casinos. I find that people either seem to love Curacao or hate it, I think if you know what to expect you will like it. Our only disappointment was that the golf was mediocre and since my husband plays every day on vacation that is what is keeping us from going right back again. But we will return at some point.

We were just there in late May. If you do a search for ...."Just returned from Lodge Kura Hulanda Beach Resort Curacao".... you can read our trip report. We did not visit the property in town however...just the beach property.
I think August would be a good time to go.
