best spots to take kids in Luxembourg?

Kids are 8 and 11. We will be driving. Are there any particular sights kids might enjoy?

Has anyone visited an especially interesting castle in Luxembourg? Or have experience taking kids to sights in the area? Any information you could share would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Rosy

Luxembourg National Tourist office: 212-935-8888 should be helpful if no Fodorite chimes in - www.luxembourg.co.uk

Clervaux, a town north of Luxembourg City, has a famous castle - the castle of your kids' dreams even though it's now rather Ersatz, being fiathfully rebuilt after being burnt down during WWII.

My younger son is a castle nut and he loved the castle in Vianden. Vianden itself is a charming small town with remains of the old wall to explore. Driving to Vianden from Luxembourg City, you will see the Castle on the hilltop as you approach the town below. It is a beautiful sight. Inside, the castle is pretty bare. If you google Vianden, you will see a picture of the castle. One of the towns that you will pass on the way is Echternach (sp?)which is a pretty town in its own right. If you get to Belgium, you might want to check out Castle Gravenstien located in the center of the old section of Ghent - a city worth a visit. It has a moat, historical exhibits and also the gruesome types of exhibits inside that kids seem to love.

While they might not "enjoy" this, a great history lesson for them would be the American Cemetery just outside Luxembourg City (Patton is buried there). They are of the age where they should know that everything isn't pretty. It's much easier to enjoy the "sights" when you have some history behind you.

The chairlift at Vianden is fun for kids, you can combine it with the castle.

(The rest of the website is interesting too.)

There are some lovely rivers you can paddle, swim or canoe in in the area too.
