Considering New England trip in Aug - where to go??

My bf and I are considering a trip to New England this summer (Early August). Neither of us have ever been anywhere in N.E. besides Boston and we're thinking of going to Maine or Rhode Island but I have no idea where to go or what to do there. We're both in our 20s so we would ideally be looking for a place that has interesting restaurants, bars, etc. Bf is a big beach person, I prefer shopping..so a place that could combine the two interests would be great Most likely we'd go to Boston for two days or so to visit friends and then go somewhere else. No Cape Cod, because I have friends who live there and I've been before.

Any ideas?

We'd be driving there, and staying about 5 days. Thanks!

Acadia Nationa Park is THE tourist destination for Maine. I loved it - you can easily enjoy 5 days or 5 weeks there.

Much shorter drive from Boston to Newport - check mapquest for distances/travel time - may matter, depending on if 5 days is total time or time plus travel.

For your requirements, definitely Newport! Tons of bars and cute shops but with gorgeous scenery as well.

Just to be different ... I'd like to suggest Portsmouth NH area. Nice beaches in Rye and Hampton. Great restaurants and nice shops in downtown Portsmouth. Drive across the bridge to Kittery ME for terrific outlet shopping. Great scenery, great short drives. Theater, music. Beautiful Prescott Park, Historic Strawbery Banke, great harbor cruises. About an hour north of Boston.

Let's see...2 twenty somethings want a combination beach/shopping vacation in a location that has good bars and restaurants. And the closer to Boston, the easier it will be to visit their friends. And they have ruled the Cape out. Those criteria practically SCREAM Newport! Not that Newport has exactly world class beaches, but they are fine for a few days and the Beaches of South County RI are only a half an hour away if BF doesn't like any of the three beaches in the Newport/Middletown area.

Of course another obvious choice would be Maine's Ogunquit-Kittery-Wells-Kennebunkport area. Miles of beautiful beaches, lots of outlet shopping in Kittery. Just a short hop from Boston.

Maine's beaches are quite beautiful, but if you want to swim the water will be almost 10 degrees colder there than in Rhode Island.....
