Very sad, indeed.
I will likely plan an all-Zim trip for next May, following Indaba. What better way to help the Zim people and wildlife? There are still some great lodges/camps in Zimbabwe and plus my favorite guide is still in Zimbabwe where he conducts private guiding:

According to this news report from 3/3/05, Mugabe admitted it was a mistake to get rid of the white farmers
http://tinyurl.com/otcgp
And this news article from 4/29/06 says now Mugabe is offering to let white farmers come back. In this same article, it says they are still forcing white farmers off the land. So it sounds like a lose/lose situation.

It is just criminal what Mugabe has done to all of the citizens of Zimbabwe. And it's not over yet.

Thanks for posting. I've been reading everything I can find since we will be there for a few days in July. Right now I'm reading African Laughter by Doris Lessing, who spent her childhood in Zimbabwe. The whole situation just gets more deeply depressing all the time.

I will be staying on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls this fall. Has anyone crossed over to the Zimbabwe side recently? Do I have to worry about the Zim border guards expecting bribes to cross back and forth?

RBCal,
Your best views of Victoria Falls, especially at your chosen time of visit, will be on the Zimbabwean side of the falls. Are you planning on crossing the border despite all of the negative things you have written in your attempts to steer people away from Zimbabwe? I guess you would not readily admit to doing so, even if you do cross the border.

Hari,
Are you wondering about safety in Jamaica or something else? Where are you staying? For the most part, Jamaica is very safe but you don't want to be walking around the wrong neighborhood in Kingston (but I could just as easily insert LA, NY, Nairobi, etc. here).

Patty,
Yes, next yr for the cricket world cup in teh Caribbean. Dont know where i'm staying yet. But the cricket is in Kingston.......i am trying to stay closer to Kingston, that i can drive in for the semi-finals. I have booked the Grenada portion of my trip. Yet to do Jamaica. It's not as interesting as planning my Africa trips, i must admit.

I was just in Zimbabwe about 10 days ago to visit Victoria Falls. We flew British Airways from Joburg to VFA. No problems at the airport, $30 for the visa. We also had a land transfer to Chobe and back and had no problems with the border crossing coming or going. The people of Zimbabwe were wonderful and so glad to have visitors. I hope the situation changes soon.

Hari,
It depends on where you are in Jamaica...as anywhere in the world. There is crime...I won't deny it. But if you don't do stupid things like wander off into a garison area...or walk around anouncing to the world that you have money and are a tourist then you should be o.k.
BTW...If you haven't booked your hotel yet...what on earth are you waiting for? There aren't that many hotels in Kingston and I suspect that they'll be filling up pretty darn quickly (if they aren't already full!). Get on that booking asap Hari!
