Is Delta strict... carry on restrictions?

Hi,
I'm really paronoid about my luggage getting lost. That said, after several attempts I've managed to downsize, two mid-large backpacks and one very small carry on with wheels for my husband and I. Three bags for two weeks!
I thought I was all set until I checked Delta's website(yes,a liitle late), to find out that only one carry on is allowed per person, excluding one personal item.
I haven't flown overseas in a couple of years, so I'm not quite sure what to expect. Does anyone know just how strict they really are?

I have flown Delta alot, but only domestically. They have always been strict about only 1 carry-on, plus personal item.

Once I had a tiny purse, a small tote, and a small rolling tote. This was a problem until I stuffed the purse into the tote.

If any legs of your flights are on their smaller planes, you will often have to gatecheck your carryon anyway--so I always make sure I have a small tote to carry on essentials that I won't part with.

Well at the Nashville airport for example you won't even get past the ID checker with three bags.

However, do you have three bags for both of you or three bags each? If it's three bags for both of you, then you should be OK IF one of them will fit under the seat which most backpacks will.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but here in Atlanta if you have 2 mid-size to large backpacks PLUS a small suitcase, something will have to be checked. I've seen this all too often when I've been checking in and Delta has been stricter over the last couple of years.

Sometimes it's not even the airline that will get you. The airport employees in Tampa that aren't affiliated with any one airline will stop you before the tram to the concourses if you have more than the one carryon + one personal item. They've been very strict lately. I've seen this at other airports too.

this is not unique to delta.

as mentioned, the security checkers at begining of line seem also to be in charge of making sure no one gets past a counter or kiosk check-in with more than the alotted number of bags.

my aunt had a roll on, a small carryon and her purse.
her sister had just a carry on.

they virtually had to go through line switching their bags so each one had two, instead of three and one. they were told that they must clear the machines and tsa agents in same fashion.

You can do three bags, or even four bags carried-on. Just not they way you do it.

You can each have a 20-22" roller, and then you can carry a large purse and your husband can carry something like a camera bag.

Not saying you need to take those exact 4 items. Just saying you can take a lot on a plane, as long as you play the game correctly.

Besides the number of pieces allowed, you need to check on the dimensions and the weight allowed for carry-on.
