What is the best way to get to Cesky Krumlov from Prague? Rick Steves says the BUS is best. Any comments or advice? Where is the bus station in Prague and where can I get info on rates and times? I also need a return from Cesky Krumlov back to Prague. We will travel by train from Budapest to Prague, Does it make sense to try to see Cesky Krumlov enroute to Prague or go straight to Prague from Budapest and then a few days later backtrack to see Cesky K. After this we head to Krakow. Thanks!!

I did this 2 yrs ago by bus. The bus station is accessible by subway, but not connected (hopefully someone will know which sub station, or else just ask hotel).

I remember having the most problem finding the bus station, since there isn't really a big sign at the door. It was around the corner and across the street from the subway (I think you should just ask anyone to pinpoint where it is when you get out of the subway).

The trip is a good 3 hrs. Buy tickets a few days ahead to be safe and to get a seat. The one I was on was packed full (even in Oct), plus they let people on without seats. These people had to stand in the aisle the whole trip.

I went there by a special day tour bus company, if you just intend a day trip, I think that would be the easiest (I used Martin Tours, but there are others). Then, you will be taken directly there, won't have to worry about any connections or getting into center city from wherever you get out (the train station is farther), etc. The rates are not expensive for those companies, but the bus fare alone is very cheap in the Czech Republic and nothing you need to worry about. It is very small.

I think there are various buses -- some leave from Florenc, where there is a metro stop so might be easiest. These times may not be most accurate, but give you an idea of times and fares and bus station locations

We did the bus trip in July. The trip there took MUCH longer than the return trip, due to lots of traffic. Our bus to Cesky Krumlov was very crowded, with some people standing for most of the trip. When we arrived at the bus, there was a long line of people, which we waited on for a few minutes, before realizing that we were supposed to go to the front of the line because we had reserved seats. Also, we were surprised when the bus left us at a different place in Prague than where we had started. The bus station in Cesky Krumlov was close to the town.
We also went to Budapest and Krakow and loved both of them. Have a great time!

We actually rented a car - this was in 1997. It is an amazing little town well worth the visit!

I want to take a bus there for a over night stay, but not with any tour. Do the buses take you straight to Cesky Krumlov with out getting off the bus? or does the bus take you to Cesky Budejovice and then you have to get on a different bus, that takes you to Cesky Krumlov. I’m confused about this. I would rather take a bus that takes you directly there without changing buses.

I can only address part of your question. We took the bus to CK from Prague a couple of years ago based on Rick Steves' recommendation. Our hotel had the schedule. We didn't have to change buses along the way, but some do require a change, and those will be indicated on the schedule. We took the subway to the bus station a day or two ahead of our travel date and bought the tickets. Our hotel even wrote out our request, which was a good thing as the ticket seller spoke very little English and we spoke very little Czech. It was helpful to do the "dry run" before the actual trip date. Riding the bus was interesting and put us close to what I imagine was the average Czech citizen. There is a short walk from the bus station (actually a parking lot) into CK, easily maneuvered with rolling luggage and decent weather. We stayed at Pension Barbakan, which was an easy walk from the parking lot. We loved CK!

I've posted this on here numerous times, the fastest way (short of renting a car) is to take the train to Ceske Budovice, from there, grab a cab the remaining few miles. They'll drop you right off in the main square & you can start at the tourist office which is very helpful.

Four years ago, we rented a car at the Prague airport and drove to Cesky Krumlov. with the help of a road map, which we also obtained at the airport. As I remember, it was an easy, 3-hour drive through some beautiful countryside. With the car, we were able to stop at Cesky Budejovice on the way back.

We will be taking a taxi FROM Cesky Krumlow to Cesky Budavice in the early morning. Our hotel in Cesky K said the ride was about 30 minutes and that it should be about $27. Hope this helps. We leave for Central Europe tomorrow!!

three years ago we were in a stew about how to get from cesky krumlov to vienna. someone told us about a private van that makes the drive every other day, which we took. the price was great and it was so easy. you had to sign up at the youth hostel near the main square for the next day's ride. that same guy also went to prague on alternate days. wish i could give you more details than that.

by the way, we arrived in c.k. during their big yearly fair and it was fabulous. actually tried to avoid it, but it ended up being so local and filled with food and music. a real memory.

if you go during that time (mid-june i think) you will likely have our experience getting there on the bus. full. full. full. we actually thought we weren't going to get there at all.
whatever your transportation, you will love cesky krumlov. it's a lovely little town.

Krumlov-taxi has a website listing their fares to and from many places including Prague, Ceske Budejovice, Linz and Vienna (krumlov-taxi.cz).
We are thinking of going by taxi or van from Cesky Krumlov to Linz, then carrying on by train to Vienna, as it seems the most straightforward way. Has anyone done this?

I have come across mention of a daily shuttle bus between Cesky Krumlov and Linz - "Shuttle Lobo" - Takes 1 1/2 hour - Advance Reservations required.

I have never taken it - so I have no first hand knowledge.

Leaves C.K. to Linz at 11:00

When we did it last, the taxi was very cheap, but it has been several years & was actually suggested by the tourist office in Cesky Krumlov. I can't emphasize enough how helpful they are there, make it your first stop.

I just returned from a trip to Czech Republic. We took the train both ways from Prague to CK. I think it did take longer, but the scenery and experience were part of the trip! YOu must transfer along the way and it took about 4 hours total I think. CK is wonderful! We stayed in Hotel Ruze and it was really fabulous. Had some great Czech food in town and found the people really friendly! Enjoy!!

We've reserved a taxi from the Linz airport, where we'll turn in our rental car, to CK -- the price just quoted to me was 1890 Kč, about US $85 (versus about $54 for the Lobo Shuttle for 2, but we can leave later in the afternoon). We're going to stay in CK 3 days and then we'd like to take the bus to Prague. I'd like to know whether it's the type with luggage storage below. Thanks for the info.

I did the train to Ceske Budejovice and then bus to Cesky Krumlov and it was one of my most memorable trips! Boarded the train in Prague ended up in a compartment with 5 Czechs. At every station stop I would look at the station sign for Ceske Budejovice. It never appeared so I sat back down. Approaching one station there was a PA announcement in Czech but I didn't think too much about it. When we arrived at that station my compartment mates all got off. I verified that it was not CB and sat back down. A minute or so later one of my compartment mates came back to the compartment and motioned for me to get off the train. I did, and was immediately put on a bus. It seems that they were working on a section of the track and the train from Prague could only go as far as this station. Passengers were then bussed past the constuction area and boarded a second train that took them on to CK. Had not my kind compartment mate come back and gotten me, I would have stayed on train #1 and promptly gone right back to Prague!

Yes, aloha, it's possible to stow your luggage in the compartment below the bus. At least that's what we did when we took the bus from Prague to CK about a year and a half ago. The bus was sort of like an older model Greyhound, if you're familiar with those--not totally plush, but more comfortable than a typical city bus. A possibly important point, there were no bathroom facilities on the bus we took, and it really didn't stop long enough anywhere to run in and find one.
