Looking for a quint place near Milw. to get married this winter......

We are looking for a place to get married in February, no more than 1 hr drive from Milwaukee. We got engaged on our recent trip to Paris, which we are considering our honeymoon, so we are looking for something small, inexpensive ($200 - $500 for ceremony)and quaint here at home. Here are the details:

1. Charming atmosphere for a very small ceremony, preferably in front of a fireplace
2. Sleigh rides
3. Old world charm
4. Hot cocoa
5. Accomodations not needed if near Milwaukee, just ambiance for ceremony. Does anyone know about what Old World Wisconsin might offer? On their website it says that there is a barn that is offered for weddings, but I think it is more for a reception. We are just looking to have the ceremony somewhere quaint, and have a reception elsewhere.

Help a bride-to-be out!!

AHHHHH!!! I'm mortified! I meant to say "quaint", not "quint" in the title. I hope no one is confused!!! Where's spell check when you need it!

A friend of mine was married and had a reception at Old World. However, it was in fall, so the wedding was outdoors under a tent. The reception was in the barn. I don't think it would fit with what you want though. I don't think there's a fireplace, and the upper barn floor (while not huge) does have pretty high ceilings so it's not exactly cozy. And it's a barn, so I don't know that would be considered quaint or charming.

Thanks for the info! That's what I thought. It still might be a consideration if we decide to wait until summer or fall.

Thanks again.

Jendirt ~ I remember your previous posts. I wish Mackinaw Island was closer to you...

You are on the SE section of Wisc. ~ I wonder if there is somewhere close to Chicago that would fit your bill...

I still wish Mackinaw was closer, nothing screams old world and romance more that MI.

Do let us know what you decide.
I'll keep thinking about it, Tiff

p.s. There must be something around Door County that would meet your needs. I'll keep thinking...

Thanks Tiff! I remember you too! Yeah, our plans changed a little. The Family started to feel bad that they wouldn't be able to attend our ceremony if we went away somewhere, so we decided it should be somewhere close to home.

The only problem with MI and Chicago area is that it may be too far of a drive. I don't want relatives to have to stay overnight anywhere, or have to drive very far in possibly bad weather. My fiance's cousin just got married last spring at a restaurant called The Golden Mast on Okauchee Lake, which was gorgeous! It was an afternoon thing, nothing too outrageos. We want something like that without being a copy-cat. Something simple, elegant, cozy and celebratory!!

Thanks Tiff!

Fox & Hounds, looks promising! Kohler, (I'm assuming you're referring to The American Club) although beautiful, maybe too extravigant for what we are looking for.

Please keep the advice coming! I know there is something out there that is just what we're looking for!

Congratulations Jendirt,

Is Olbrich Gardens in Madison too far?

http://www.olbrich.org/

Maybe Ten Chimneys?

St. Johns Military Academy Chapel (Delafield)?

The Seth Peterson Cottage? (close to Devil's Head on Mirror Lake. It is a Frank Lloyd Wright designed cottage. It has a large stone fireplace and lots of windows.)

Hope you find the perfect place!

How about Lake Geneva, WI. Gilberts Restauarnt may fit the bill. http://www.gilbertsrestaurant.com/
If not Gilberts, there are many other options in the Lake Geneva area.

I was born and raised in Fort Atkinson (about 1hr) I now live in Milwaukee area. When I go looking for "experiences" I now look to the cities. Have you carefully considered what middle of downtown Milwaukee or Racine has to offer? If that is not a consideration I would look toward Manitowoc area. I would like to go to Nowhere Wisconsin in february! That is why I think downtowns would be better. Hand in hand on the Milwaukee river walk, old world architecture, some shops with some husstle and bustle, might be warmerish in the shelter of the buildings, fresh snow, could be the stuff movie sets are made of. Racine would be my choice in summer, Milwaukee in winter. In fact my honeymoon was at the Phister. (1985)

Have you checked out b&b's? Some do offer weddings. We stayed at one (not in the area you want) a few weeks ago that had a couple who married there. Just the two of them, no family or friends but it was what they each wanted. There was an organ and fireplace and she walked down the historic wooden stairway in a beautiful white gown. (I opened our b&b room door and took a peak) I don't know what they paid but the b&b furnished everything, real flowers, music, ceremony, beautiful professional looking picture that we saw the next morning at breakfast) They left the next day to drive back home for a reception with their friends and family. They just wanted an intimate, romantic wedding and the house was beautiful.

Thank you, Thank You!!! I can't believe I've lived here all my life, and I didn't think of Lake Geneva. It is so close to my house too!! I really like Gilberts and the French Country Inn! We weren't really considering a church ceremony, but St. Johns is so pretty, and Delafield is very charming!! Unfortunately, Madison is too far. I haven't checked out Elkhart Lake yet, but I will. Great ideas everyone! Thank you all so much, and I will keep you posted as to how it all goes! Of course if you have anymore advice, I'd love to hear it!

I second Elkhart Lake. The lodge there may even have a romantic weekend package that would fit nicely with your plans.

There is a quaint old hotel in nearby Cedarburg. The Kohler Club is gorgeous in Winter.
Best Wishes!!
